Jen Hyde Creative Sonoma Grantee, Literature, Media, Non-Fiction, Other

Jen Hyde is a writer, editor, and storytelling expert. Her essays have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Longreads and elsewhere.

A 2016 finalist for the Creative Capital Grant in Literature, and Jen has received fellowships from Yaddo, The Millay Colony, and the Asian American Writer's Workshop. Most recently she has been a 2023 scholar at the Sonoma County Writer's Camp and a 2023 Creative Sonoma ACE grantee. She is currently at work on a memoir about chronic illness and Chinese diasporic identity.

Amanda Janik Literature, Non-Fiction, Other, Performance Art Amanda Janik (yes, going for third person here, folks) lives in Sonoma County and spends her days writing, editing, proofreading, posting, cooking, drinking, saying 'no' to children, and trying to figure out who or what is pecking her chickens' eggs apart. A Cultural Ambassador for Out There Santa Rosa, Amanda's writing has also been published in The Sun Magazine, on Chacos.com, Silver Birch Press and throughout the Sonoma County Visitor's Guide, to name a few. She has also read her personal writing at Get Lit!, Lit Crawl, Lyrics & Dirges and more. In 2015 Amanda brought the hit stage show Mortified - which also has a documentary on Netflix and a popular weekly podcast - to Sonoma County. When not producing the local chapter, she can still be found performing on Mortified stages in San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Los Angeles and New York, with more to come. She has participated on behalf of Mortified at SF SketchFest, SF ImprovFest, and at private events she's not allowed to talk about.

Maya Khosla Film, Literature, Media, Poetry Maya Khosla is the Poet Laureate of Sonoma County for 2018-2019 and is working on The Local Legacies Project. Her new poetry book, “All the Fires of Wind and Light,” is forthcoming from Sixteen Rivers Press in 2019. Maya’s previous wildfire and fire safety films have made an impact on communities and non-profit groups across California and other parts of the United States. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, rough-cut and final versions were screened and/or discussed at over 60 venues, including a public event held at The Sitting Room (October 14th, 2017, during the Sonoma Fires), where Firewise and related materials were presented along with a poetry reading. The poems were inspired by traditional herbs used to enhance the body's ability to treat smoke exposure. The screenings and post-film discussions resulted in a sense of hope, joy, and also immense public support for our natural areas that are rejuvenated by wildfire. Immediately after the October 2017 fires, KRCB Public TV aired parts of Firewise, Maya's ongoing film project, and they recently aired her first fire film, Searching for the Gold Spot: The Wild After Wildfire (night of August 7th, 2018). The powerful visuals in the film have inspired a new perceptions about our natural areas, brought an understanding about focused fire protection measures and leaving natural wildfires in the wild to their natural processes to dramatically reduce risks to homes - as been shown by thousands of case studies. Maya’s work has been supported by grant-awards from Patagonia, The Sacramento Audubon Society, Fund for Wild Nature, and Environment Now. Maya has since written essays devoted to post-fire forests, including “Forests Rebound on Their Own “Faith in Rejuvenation” and “Pioneers of the Post-Fire Forests.”

Chelsea Rose Kurnick Creative Sonoma Grantee, Literature, Non-Fiction, Performance Art, Photography, Poetry, Visual Arts Chelsea Rose Kurnick (she/her) is a writer and artist from southern California living in Sonoma County. She earned a BA in Linguistics in 2010 from the University of California Riverside, where she was also editor-in-chief of Mosaic: A Journal of Literature and Art. In 2013-14, she created and hosted The Casserole, an online literary reading series that aired live on Youtube featuring remote guests from all over the world. Chelsea began studying the craft of poetry at age 15 and began curating literary arts events at 20. She attributes most of her education in writing to community workshops and weekly open mics, which she has sought out since 2005 in every city she’s lived. Chelsea believes that poetry and storytelling are powerful tools for building empathy and are at their most vital when experienced in person. Chelsea’s work explores longing and loss, sometimes personal and sometimes global in scope; she writes of messy partnerships and humankind’s tenuous relationship to the material world we inhabit.

I'm the author of the novel RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM, which came out in May 2021 through Blackstone Publishing. I'm also the host of What's The Story, a book-oriented radio show on 95.9 FM The Krush. Karen Lockert Artisan, Ceramics, Fiction, Literature, Mixed, Other, Painting, Sculpture, Visual Arts Karen Lockert was always the kid who daydreamed her way through school, seeing beauty in what most other people thought was quite ordinary, if not downright ugly. Her career was launched only after leaving her position as a high school art teacher in Los Angeles, when she began to understand that she had been repeatedly “re-birthing” and “re-homing” herself through her art work. She is probably best known for her evocative, mixed-media compositions of the vintage, vernacular architecture of West Sonoma County, where she now lives. Her work has been exhibited at many galleries in the Russian River area, including Occidental Center for the Arts, Russian River Art Gallery, Cooprider Gallery, Graton Gallery, Lawson Gallery, and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. In addition, she was a regular participant in Art @ the Source, West Sonoma County’s Open Studio tour for several years. As a spiritual, meditative artist at heart, it has been said that “her newest work gorgeously draws people into a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them”.

Gianna Marino Children's, Illustration, Literature, Visual Arts Gianna Marino was born in San Francisco and spent her early years galloping horses through Golden Gate Park. Her explorations expanded after graduating from high school and in order to afford her many journeys, Gianna had several jobs at once: apprenticing a muralist, a jewelry designer, a product designer and driving horse carriages through the park. She explored many corners of the world, from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, to the South Pacific, Europe, and as crew on sailboats in the high seas. Gianna finally landed a full-time freelance gig designing toys for children, but after several years in a corporate box with no windows, she left for good and began painting, illustrating and writing books for children. Gianna has written over a dozen award-winning books, including Meet Me at the Moon, Too Tall Houses, Following Papa's Song, Night Animals, Night Animals Need Sleep Too, If I Had a Horse and she is the New York Times best-selling illustrator of Don’t Let Them Disappear, written by Chelsea Clinton. Though she still wanders the world, Gianna now lives in Northern California and works full-time writing and illustrating.

Buzzy Martin Composition, Instrumental, Literature, Music, Non-Fiction, Other, Vocal Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Buzzy taught himself to play the guitar and piano at the age of 13. At the age of 15, he performed with his first band as the lead singer, playing guitar and keyboards. Buzzy has been making his dream real, one step at a time. After graduating from high school there were the traveling cover bands, steadily touring the Midwest from Michigan to Florida. In 1979, he moved to northern California, had a stint as a solo street performer at the world famous San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf. While wood shedding his composing skills, Buzzy became the much-in-demand host of a series of coffee house open mic nights, where his knowledgeable musicianship, sunny personality and non-stop encouragement helped the caffeine scene thrive. In 1980 he began to play with many local bands and musicians as a featured artist. In early 1981, he was hired as the mainstay guitar player for an Elvis Presley impersonator and became responsible for the direction and stage presence of the band. This became a highly enjoyable group to work with and afforded him the opportunity to travel the West Coast circuit. In 1984, Buzzy started his own Top 40-style band, which quickly became recognized by club owners. She was the Outreach and Workshop Coordinator for the Noorda Theater for Children and Youth. Jennie Orvino’s commercial writing credits include 11 years in the Marketing Department of the Santa Rosa Symphony, where she provided copy for press releases, brochures, print ads, newsletters, postcards, flyers and solicitation letters, as well as all the organization’s eCommunications and web content. In addition, she wrote grant applications and grant reports for the Symphony over a 6-year period. (Among grants received include the NEA, Hewlett Foundation, Irvine Foundation, Community Foundation Sonoma County, Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary, Heller Foundation and Target.) Orvino has written and/or edited newsletters for Hillel at Stanford, Face to Face/Sonoma County AIDS Network, Actor’s Theater, Santa Rosa Church of Religious Science (now the Center for Spiritual Living) and other non-profit organizations. Roy Parvin Fiction, Literature, Non-Fiction Roy Parvin is the award-winning author of two books of fiction, The Loneliest Road in America and In the Snow Forest. He has recently completed a memoir entitled My Year of Sleeping Dangerously and is also the author (under the nom de namaste of Yoga Matt) of Yoga for the Inflexible Male, forthcoming this fall from Ten Speed Press, a division of Penguin Random House. His work has been selected for inclusion in the Best American Short Stories series, has been nominated many times for the Pushcart Prize, and has been widely anthologized. He has also been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Bread Loaf Fellowship, the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in fiction, and a Ucross fellowship. Roy is an accomplished teacher, having taught in the MFA program at San Francisco State University and at numerous workshops around the country.

A nominee for the Pushcart Prize, Margo’s teaching methodology has been featured internationally, including O, the Oprah Magazine, The Press Democrat, The San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Magazine, Mexico’s El Petit Journal, Holland’s Psycologie. Her book publications include The Opposite of Hollywood; Only the Dead Can Kill: Stories from Jail; and How I Learned to Cook & Other Writings on Complex Mother-Daughter Relationshpips, as well as co-founder of Whoa Nelly Press, whose mission is to publish unheard, marginalized voices. Margo teaches poetry and creative writing in schools, after-school programs, juvenile hall, alternative schools, children’s homes, through Poetry Out Loud, libraries, community centers, art centers, hospitals, jails and prisons. Since the October 2017 Sonoma County fires, Margo has taught writing workshops to children and adults to help them heal from the trauma of the fires, as featured in The Press Democrat. Having grown up in five countries and two continents with a father on the run from the law, Margo has a deep understanding of issues faced by at risk children, youth and adults and the exigencies of living as an outsider to mainstream culture. As a writer, her direct, hands-on development of writing techniques to help foster a strong sense of identity, self-empowerment and healing from trauma informs her teaching methodology. Her experience as a cancer survivor has also given her a special understanding of the particular and often invisible needs of students with health issues. She is passionate about providing the opportunity for commonly unheard or marginalized perspectives and stories to be expressed and appreciated.

As a visual artist, I work intuitively with found and recycled element. Originally from the rural Delmarva Peninsula on the mid-Atlantic coast, Christopher attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, before moving to New York City, where he lived and worked for a decade. He graduated from the MFA program at the School of Visual Arts (NYC) in 2002.

Whether exploring an abandoned city lot or a tract of forest far from an urban center, he still feels the same excitement he felt as a boy, when he found many of his experiences in the "natural" world similar to those of Lewis Carroll’s Alice. Carroll’s premise that "things get curiouser and curiouser" guided Christopher through many an outdoor adventure. As an adult, his love of the outdoors has evolved into a fascination with natural history, conservation, and ecology, and his visual art, illustration, design, and writing projects wrestle with contemporary constructions of nature, and the human relationship to nonhuman animal species.
