Evelyn Nitzberg

Evelyn Nitzberg Illustration, Other, Painting, Visual Arts I'm a Sonoma County, California Artist. I grew up on a chicken ranch through the 1950s. My NYC parents came by train to Petaluma in 1949 on their honeymoon. They tell me that I started drawing when I was only two years old...and I never stopped making art. Aside from working in the family business, growing up in the country was a mecca for exploration and discovery. I spent many happy hours alone, drawing and constructing things, or with my siblings running through the fields, thrilling over pollywogs, climbing trees, digging through the owl pile in the barn looking for mouse bones to glue to my grandfather's thrown away cigar box tops. In college I majored in Painting and Drawing at San Francisco State University; toward the end of my undergrad days I learned as much as I could about Printing Technology. I spent ten years working as a Photolithographer in Bay Area Print Shops. I also wound up painting a 4'x16' mural depicting the history of printing technology in the U.S. It was presented at the St. Francis Hotel in SF during the 125th anniversary convention and was published across the U.S. and Canada. In the 1980s I worked as part of a team of field biologists censusing Gray Whales in Bajia Magdalena in the Lagunas in Baja. As a result of these incredible adventures with Ron Patterson and Ron LaValley I wound up working as a freelance Biological Illustrator for the local community college. My artistic bent has taken me in many directions: muralist for the ITU in SF, illustrator of CD covers for NY Sticktet player, Steve Adelson, logo designer for the band Signia (2004), flyer design for Norman Greenbaum of Spirit in the Sky, T-shirt and fabric design, many commissioned paintings for clients in L.A., Chicago, SF, NYC, Marin County. I currently continue to oil paint and teach in my rural studio. I love to paint very special biographical personal pieces for clients. I still love the creative process! In 2015 I earned the esteemed status of Signature Artist with Society of Western Artists for having earned 150 points over a three year period for having been juried into shows at 5 points each for bi-monthly shows and 30 points each for the annual exhibits. I have exhibited and won awards for my paintings since I was 17 years old. And I won the Petaluma Art Association annual scholarship when I graduated from Petaluma High School in 1970. My exhibit resume is extensive and includes Award of Merit at the State Fair in Sacramento, all First Place Awards, Best of Show Overall and monetary award at the Cloverdale Citrus Fair, numerous First Place Awards with San Francisco Women Artists and Society of Western Artists whose annual juried in exhibits honored me as an artist in print in the annual catalogs in '13,'14,'16. I continue to teacher Drawing and Printmaking with Petaluma Adult Education, at the Petaluma Art Center and in my studio. I taught for Sonoma County Schools for more than 20 years.

Tove Norlander

Tove Norlander Artisan, Jewelry I was born and raised in Norway and have been designing jewelry in silver and gold for the last 40 years. My jewelry is made using the “lost wax method”. I first create the jewelry in wax, then it’s set in plaster and burned out in a kiln, eliminating the wax and leaving a cavity in the plaster in the shape of the finished product. Molten metal is then poured with centrifugal force into the cavity to form the jewelry. After the casting process comes the time consuming filing and the polishing. My designs have a simple, elegant and sculptural quality in which one can sense my Scandinavian background. I enjoy working directly with clients, creating jewelry to fit their individual style. Many pieces are created around natural stones which I select for their interesting colors and textures. I often mix silver and gold for a unique look. Custom wedding rings and special designs using precious stones are one of my specialties. My work can be seen in galleries in California and Sedona, Arizona. My work is also in a gallery in Norway and a museum in Stockholm, Sweden. I’ve had several exhibitions in the U.S., Norway, Sweden, Holland and Switzerland. My work has also been sold in Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

Sandra Novia

Sandra Novia Teacher/Instructor, Teaching Artist for Youth, Visual Arts Sandra Novia is an artist and art instructor, living in Sonoma County for 23 years. In addition to teaching, she is a commercial and fine artist. Sandra works as a graphic designer, color consultant, and is currently providing team building and group art workshops throughout Sonoma County. Her educational programs also include teaching in local public schools and art centers, Sonoma County Public Libraries, Sonoma State University Excel programs, as well as providing private classes for home schooled students and private students. She passionately has dedicated over 20 years to ensuring that art education is firmly planted in the educational programs of our school systems and her community. An East coast native, she received her formal education in Boston, the south of France, and San Francisco focusing on design, drawing, and sculpture. She founded two galleries for emerging artists and owned a sign design business for 20 years. Her love of art has encouraged her to travel to different parts of the world, experiencing some of history's most amazing art and enthusiastically shares those experiences with her students. She has participated in the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts integrative art program provided by the JFK Center for the Performing Arts and is currently a teaching artist in the Creative Sonoma Arts and Trauma Program for one year.

Michael O'Brien

Michael O'Brien Composition, Instrumental, Music, Vocal I run my own music business, and entertain on both piano and guitar, at over 25 different retirement facilities (Dementia Care; Assisted Living; Convalescent Homes; Post-Acute Rehab facilities; Senior Centers; etc.) throughout the North Bay. The program is usually built around music from the Big-Band and Swing era, though I am frequently called on to do shows of other types of music, 60's music; British, Classical, Beatles; Patriotic; Musicals; Original; etc., etc.

Patrick O'Rourke

Patrick O'Rourke Recovery Fund Grantee, Visual Arts Patrick O’Rourke is a contemporary artist from Northern California, crafting beautiful landscapes and creative textural images. He paints a richly diverse subject matter, but draws primary inspiration from the oak studded hills, rolling vineyards, soaring redwoods, and rugged coastlines of Napa and Sonoma Counties.This artistic process began as a child under the influence of his mother, a life long artist working in oils and pastels. Patrick has worked in all mediums throughout his life, but now devotes himself to acrylics on canvas. His work can be found in the homes of fine art collectors throughout the world.

Nancy OConnell

Nancy OConnell Design, Graphic Design, Multi-Media, Recovery Fund Grantee I am a full service designer located in the northbay specializing in visual communications for print and web. Committed to excellence in design I bring my in-depth experience in the fields of print and web design with a sharp eye for pixel-perfect creative solutions to every project from concept through completion. I have expert level skills in print design software including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. In recent years I have focused on web design with a strong focus on social media development. Other skills include illustration, packaging, presentation design, and mobile design.

Old Century Blood

Old Century Blood Music Old Century Blood Born in a yurt, Old Century Blood is indie rockfolk that ebbs and flows with chaos and love. Porch poetry written with inkblot inklings of love, death and joy. A melancholy lust for life. Old Century Blood is a vibrant and dynamic form of music that stands out in its uniqueness. Sonic landscapes provide a backdrop to idiosyncratic poetic lyrics, violin solos, and soaring male/female harmonies. This is music to which people can dance, then cry, and then dance again. A refined, unique sound that takes the familiar (classical instruments, vocal harmony) to a new level of grit & beauty. Not Americana but feels folky. Not rock but it moves as such. Founding member, Guitarist/vocalist Christopher James has been playing and performing, mostly as a solo act, for over 25 years. In Eugene, Oregon he was the founder and front man of a local well-established local act, Atrial Flutter. As a solo artist, he has shared the stage with such acts as Bill Frisell and Jessie Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter. Co-founder, vocalist and violinist Kirana Peyton has had the pleasure of performing with many gifted musicians including Les Claypool, Jesca Hoop and Drag City artists Faun Fables. She’s enjoyed working in the studio with esteemed sound engineers such as Oz Fritz (Tom Waits, Bootsie Collins, Bill Laswell) and Bob Daspit (Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman). While playing nationally and internationally, she’s opened for Nick Cave’s Grinderman, Deerhoof, Amanda Palmer, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, John Trudell as well as many talented others. During her classical musical training at Sonoma State University she engaged in extensive studies in composition and Hindustani Indian singing. She had the great honor of receiving the Lalmani Misra Memorial scholarship for classical Indian singing. She’s also written and performed vocal arrangements for the Mo Perkins’ film “A Quiet Little Marriage”. Joni Davis contributes her strong piano and vocal skills. She is based in Northern California, but has sung her songs as far afield as England and the Netherlands. She has opened up for K.D. Lang and Aimee Mann. Joni received her bachelors in music from Goldsmith's College, University of London and has been fortunate enough to collaborate with lots of great musicians such as London based multi-instrumentalist Quinta, songwriter and musician Dylan Champagne, and Dawn McCarthy of Faun Fables. Joni records her solo music with her husband in their house and has self-released two albums, an EP, and is currently working on her third album. Old Century Blood have spent the last year refining their sound, recording a demo and playing well-attended shows. They now hope to be able to take it to the next level through a vibrant promotional campaign.

Rik Olson

Rik Olson Illustration, Visual Arts A California native, Rik received his B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He has studied under such masters as Barry Moser, John DePol, Richard McLean, and Ralph Borge. He has lived, studied and exhibited in Italy, Germany and the U.S. His influences include the years he lived in Europe and currently the beautiful countryside of Sonoma County, California. He enjoys pushing the envelope in printmaking and has recently been working on editions of multi-color linoleum cut prints. He recently took part in a fund raising event where the works of ten artists, whose over-size prints were printed by an actual steamroller, were featured.

Erin Rose Opperman

Here’s the important stuff: I have a strong, varied background in visual arts with a photography degree from Sonoma State University as well as a degree in graphic design + branding from San Francisco’s FIDM. For nearly three years I had the pleasure of working in-house, as Art Director at an award winning advertising agency, The Engine is Red. I focused on brand strategy, marketing concepts, and fully custom digital experiences. I collaborated within a team to create concepts, strategies, and results. And I led a team to ensure ideas were upheld, best practices were met, and expectations were always surpassed. I now work freelance to serve my own clients as Erin Rose Creative. I offer agency-quailty creative services without the agency price or hassle.

Here’s the fun stuff: I’m an inexplicable mix of a wildly punctual, reliable, detail-oriented, deadline driven professional AND terrible adult person who can’t make a bed or cook a meal to save her life. I’m quirky and fun, but smart, focused and I get things done. I’m obsessed with Palm Springs, anything ‘70’s, and if I could create my own version of Mt. Rushmore it would include Bowie, Warhol, Kahlo, and Frances McDormand. I've formally studied photography, painting, and design. Jennie Orvino

I received my first diary at the age of 14 and have been a writer ever since. In my career, I have learned the art of active listening and creative collaboration… and I work diligently, with complete respect for deadlines, to earn the respect of my colleagues and clients. About Jennie Orvino

Jennie Orvino’s commercial writing credits include 11 years in the Marketing Department of the Santa Rosa Symphony, where she provided copy for press releases, brochures, print ads, newsletters, postcards, flyers and solicitation letters, as well as all the organization’s eCommunications and web content. In addition, she wrote grant applications and grant reports for the Symphony over a 6-year period. (Among grants received include the NEA, Hewlett Foundation, Irvine Foundation, Community Foundation Sonoma County, Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary, Heller Foundation and Target.) Orvino has written and/or edited newsletters for Hillel at Stanford, Face to Face/Sonoma County AIDS Network, Actor’s Theater, Santa Rosa Church of Religious Science (now the Center for Spiritual Living) and other non-profit organizations. She also worked as production coordinator for Campbell & Associates Advertising/Marketing/Public Relations, and the Santa Rosa Business Journal (now North Bay Business Journal). Orvino has been a Literary Arts Producer for KRCB radio (NPR affiliate, 91.1 FM Sonoma County), where she contributed on-air interviews and book reviews (more than 20 shows of “Come Said the Muse” and “Word by Word”). She has had features published in Rohnert Park’s The Community Voice, Petaluma’s Argus Courier, the North Bay Bohemian and Sacramento News & Review. Jennie Orvino is the author of the book Poetry, Politics and Passion: memoir, poems, personal essays (2012) and a Grammy-nominated spoken word CD, Make Love Not War (2002). Her literary awards include: first prize poetry in Copperfield’s The Dickens contest; second prize poetry in the North Bay Bohemian Java Jive contest and the Don L. Emblen Award from Santa Rosa Junior College. In April 2012, Orvino was one of 10 women honored at the 6th Street Playhouse Women in the Arts Showcase. In 2014, she read in, and co-produced, the Steamy Sonoma County Erotica Salon series.

Michael Palace

Michael Palace Artisan, Woodworking My art is an homage to our connection with nature. I make alters to the natural world. It is a way to acknowledge our life and the planet into which we are inextricably woven. We tend to view ourselves as separate, so we don't hold the earth as something loved, something sacred to us. My art is so that we have a place to honor our lives and that which connects us to the awe all around us. My art uses recognizable forms and icons, like the tree. Trees are a symbol of life, an emissary of nature, and a material of construction. I create using trees that have been killed and cast aside as firewood and landfill. I believe that there is always more than one point of view on any given object, and that those views may be both opposing and correct. This is the basis of the concept of a paradox. I see my art this way: the wood is medium and messenger, a victim and a champion, alive and dead. When a piece has been created, the wood has also been transformed from “garbage” to art. The judgment of what is valuable has been altered. The trees body has become a shrine and is integrated back into life as a reality and a symbol

She was raised in Healdsburg and graduated from Sonoma State with her B.A. in Liberal Studies and Performing Arts. She has worked extensively in the commercial and film industries. For the duration of the ACE fellowship, she will be focusing on releasing new music and creating a community oriented music video that features dancing, youth, and the talent of other local artists.

Bridget Palmer

Bridget Palmer Acting, Arts Administration, Children's, Creative Sonoma Grantee, Dance, Directing, Fiction, Improvisation, Literature, Other, Teacher/Instructor, Teaching Artist for Adults, Teaching Artist for Youth, Theatre Bridget has directed theater projects with youths ages 4 -14 for over 20 years through her programs Santa Rosa Children’s Theater, Show Biz Kidz, A Theater For Children, and her role as a Drama Specialist in Sonoma County schools. She guest directs at a variety of locations and also works for the Luther Burbank Center as a Teaching Artist. Her Residencies include Story Ninjas, Math Dance, Empowering the Inner Hero, Mastery Through Movement, and Eco-System in a Box. Bridget enjoys “play”ing with hundreds of children each year and loves the excitement of performance projects which culminate within 6-10 sessions. She studied Theater Directing at UC Berkeley and completed the LBC’s Kennedy Center Teaching Artist professional training, as well as several other Arts Integration professional development trainings related to Drama, Movement, and Storytelling. Bridget helps children become high performers through acting-based activities. Bridget also loves writing scripts and producing comedy improv. She founded and ran the 6th Street Improv adult troupe from 2008-2013 in Santa Rosa at the 6th Street Playhouse. In 2018, she wrote her first play for children: "Alex & The Magic Staff", with an anti-bullying theme. She is currently looking for a producer for her screenplay, Amazing Grace. Miss Bridget's latest passion is saving Nature. In 2023, she is launching https://wesavetheworld.org, the story sharing platform kids can use to become eco-heroes.

Eileen Parent

Eileen Parent Mixed, Other, Painting, Printmaking, Teacher/Instructor, Visual Arts Eileen Parent is an abstract printmaker living in Sonoma County, C.A. She was born in upstate New York and grew up surrounded by nature. Her artwork is influenced by her surroundings and her curiosity to explore the organic shapes and patterns she finds in nature and urban environments. She uses line and mark making to create a response to these patterns. She is interested in time, repetition, intuition, and the documentation of our physical presence. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in painting and drawing from UC Berkeley. While experimenting with different artistic mediums she was drawn to the process of printmaking. She fell in love with printmaking’s traditional techniques and historical background and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from Sonoma State University. She has exhibited her work in Sonoma County and the greater San Francisco Bay area. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts and is currently a lecturer in Art Studio at Sonoma State University.

John Partridge

John Partridge Acting, Composition, Directing, Music, Theatre I have been a composer and performer all my life. I graduated from UC Santa Cruz with an AB in composition and conducting. I have worked in many forms including chamber music, opera, musical theater, church music and ragtime. I am currently the Director of Music Ministries at the First Presbyterian Church of Napa and Music Director of the Sonoma Hometown Band.

Roy Parvin

Roy Parvin Fiction, Literature, Non-Fiction Roy Parvin is the award-winning author of two books of fiction, The Loneliest Road in America and In the Snow Forest. He has recently completed a memoir entitled My Year of Sleeping Dangerously and is also the author (under the nom de namaste of Yoga Matt) of Yoga for the Inflexible Male, forthcoming this fall from Ten Speed Press, a division of Penguin Random House. His work has been selected for inclusion in the Best American Short Stories series, has been nominated many times for the Pushcart Prize, and has been widely anthologized. He has also been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a Bread Loaf Fellowship, the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in fiction, and a Ucross fellowship. Roy is an accomplished teacher, having taught in the MFA program at San Francisco State University and at numerous workshops around the country.

Kayatta Patton

Kayatta Patton Composition, Music, Other, Vocal My name is Kayatta Patton. My stage name is Kayatta and I have a ton of other names that are too many list. I am an educator, poet, song writer and lyricist. I grew up on the west side of Oakland with my mother and sister. My first exposure to music was at the expense of my grandmother Nana. She'd play Bobby Blue Bland while the kids played in the yard and the adults played spades and smoked cigarettes. I remember those days like yesterday and though Bobby Blue Bland was amazing I had a thing for rap and r and b. It spoke my love language. Maybe it was the beat or the way words were stitched over the beats. I'm not sure exactly what the connect was but it shaped and became the sounds track of my life I first got my feet wet trying out for the band in the 3rd grade. Back then schools actually had programs where we could take the instruments home. I chose the trumpet. That was the mustard seed that would fueled her artistic inspiration. Over the years I worked diligently and challenged myself musically and artistically. In doing so I was able to hone in on the craft and become comfortable in my skin. The lyrical execution is profound and passionate with heaps of soul and raw emotion. Rooted in hip-hop and spoken word, raspy authenticity, and a knack for engaging the audience. My work ethic she has enabled me to evolve from just being an MC to an all around artist. It is simply honey in the form of words.

Ron Pawlowski

Ron Pawlowski Other, Performance Art, Theatre Ron SonomaMagic is a magician, prestidigitator, and sleight-of-hand artist based out of Northern California. He performs stage magic, close-up magic, and street magic at festivals and events EVERYWHERE!

Satri Pencak

Satri Pencak Artisan Satri Pencak has an M.A. in Art History and is an independent curator, writer, speaker, and consultant. As an Independent Curator Satri has recently organized several notable exhibitions, including Cast Forged & Welded: MetalWorks, Petaluma Arts Center; Symbiosis: Art & Science Intersect, Santa Rosa Junior College; Form & Finish: Sculptures by Michael Cooper & John de Marchi, Petaluma Arts Center; and Bob Nugent: Dialogues with Nature, Art Works Downtown, San Rafael. She writes art reviews and art commentary for two websites, www.satripencak.com, and www.sonomacounty.com. Previously, Satri served as Director of Exhibitions at Sebastopol Center for the Arts from 2000 to 2011. Satri travels throughout the Bay Area, and beyond, visiting museums, galleries, and artist’s studios gathering ideas and information for exhibitions she organizes or writes about.

Margo Perin

Margo Perin Literature, Teacher/Instructor, Teaching Artist for Adults, Teaching Artist for Youth Margo Perin is the Sonoma County Area Coordinator for California Poets in the Schools and has taught poetry and creative writing for more than thirty-five years. A nominee for the Pushcart Prize, Margo’s teaching methodology has been featured internationally, including O, the Oprah Magazine, The Press Democrat, The San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Magazine, Mexico’s El Petit Journal, Holland’s Psycologie. Her book publications include The Opposite of Hollywood; Only the Dead Can Kill: Stories from Jail; and How I Learned to Cook & Other Writings on Complex Mother-Daughter Relationshpips, as well as co-founder of Whoa Nelly Press, whose mission is to publish unheard, marginalized voices. Margo teaches poetry and creative writing in schools, after-school programs, juvenile hall, alternative schools, children’s homes, through Poetry Out Loud, libraries, community centers, art centers, hospitals, jails and prisons. Since the October 2017 Sonoma County fires, Margo has taught writing workshops to children and adults to help them heal from the trauma of the fires, as featured in The Press Democrat. Having grown up in five countries and two continents with a father on the run from the law, Margo has a deep understanding of issues faced by at risk children, youth and adults and the exigencies of living as an outsider to mainstream culture. As a writer, her direct, hands-on development of writing techniques to help foster a strong sense of identity, self-empowerment and healing from trauma informs her teaching methodology. Her experience as a cancer survivor has also given her a special understanding of the particular and often invisible needs of students with health issues. She is passionate about providing the opportunity for commonly unheard or marginalized perspectives and stories to be expressed and appreciated.

Brenda Phillips

Brenda Phillips Sculpture, Visual Arts ReBirth Living Sculpture pulls together passed on decorative art pieces and plants — typically succulents — to create upcycled living sculptures for homes, establishments, and gardens. Imagine everything from a small, multi-colored glass arrangement with succulents to 4 feet tall fountains made of stacked ceramic pieces to a 9-foot tall art sculpture with a central spinning ornate frame to take selfies in — perfect for a winery or city sculpture garden — to welded, galvanized metal pots on rods to grow tomatoes inside to a tranquil and harmonious succulent composition on drift wood hung with dangling windchimes to hanging light fixtures overflowing with plants. Each of our pieces utilizes repurposed items combined in new ways along with plants. The resulting sculptures are unexpected living creations that change with time and conditions. Each is unique, designed by hand, often multi-purpose, and harmonious. Some inspire joy, others whimsy, and others are peaceful.
