Special Education and the Arts
Join the California Alliance for Arts Education, P.S. ARTS and the PTA for a webinar on February 10, 2021 about the intersections of special education, the arts and distance learning. This program will present findings from a two-year study examining the relationship between social emotional learning and participation in inclusive arts programs among students with disabilities and without disabilities. Presenters will offer case studies from the research study and discuss how special education programs have responded to the challenges and opportunities presented by distance learning during COVID-19. The conversation will include the perspectives of a school administrator, teaching artist, classroom teacher and parent. Learn more HERE.
Professional Development in Trauma Informed Teaching Practices
Offered through the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, explore the types of trauma, how trauma impacts brain development, and how to identify behaviors that indicate a triggered response in a training on February 16, 2021. While teachers cannot fix students who have experienced trauma, participants will walk away with strategies they can implement in the classroom (and virtually) that will support a calm, safe environment, the healing process, and important tools for self-care. The Santa Rosa Symphony offers various music programming options throughout the year to assist teachers in providing musical experiences for their students in addition to what’s offered at school. Dr. Merryl Goldberg, CSUSM Professor of Music and Executive Director of ART=OPPORTUNITY, recently presented to the AEA District Administrator Meetup on “How Arts and Arts Integration Impact Academic Achievement.” Dr. Goldberg shared years of research and data point now available through “Why Art” cards. A Look at How Arts Teachers Can Promote A Sense of Community
Arts teachers have specific skills that can grow a schoolwide movement of community and engagement, if permitted to do so. Creating community in new and genuine ways, often without much additional funding, is what arts teachers offer up to their schools.
