Sashiko Workshop: Small Projects in Japanese Embroidery

Join Bay Area artist Lena Wolff to learn the meditative art of Sashiko.

In this introductory workshop, participants will learn the techniques, materials, and methods of Sashiko, a meditative form of embroidery that draws from a lexicon of lyrical and geometric patterns that developed in Japan in the early 1600’s. Together we’ll make two small projects – a hand-sewn coaster and lavender filled pouch with linen and naturally dyed Sashiko thread. The basic principles of Sashiko will be introduced, including an array of stitches and how to read and draft patterns onto fabric with ease. Reference material will be given to all students at the end of the class as fodder for future projects with clothing or textiles.
