JOB OPPORTUNITY: Art Marketing Consultant
The Cedars of Marin provides programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by cultivating their interests, skills and independence to live creative, productive and joyous lives. As a part of Cedars team, you will display caring, sensitivity and flexibility in working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the programs. This work is fun, creative, fulfilling and challenging.
Cedars has received an 18-month AHEAD grant from the FHL Bank San Francisco and sponsored by Bank of Marin for “Artists Unlimited” to expand income opportunities for artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The ultimate goal is to work with one or more consultants to create and implement a business plan over the next 18 months to sell the work of Cedars artists to the broader community while addressing several important needs:
1) respond to a national mandate to increase work/income opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities; 2) address Cedars artists’ needs–most of whom are low income individuals–to earn much needed funds while capitalizing on their entrepreneurial spirit; 3) benefit from new, diverse and expansive markets. The consultant(s) will be independent contractors paid hourly and work closely with a small team from Cedars on an ongoing basis.
The project would include four distinct phases to explore new market opportunities, including, but not limited to creating an online store, entering into licensing agreements with other retailers, or partnering with staging companies or companies who place corporate art.
1. An external assessment of a) market demand in each of the identified areas; b) best practices for expanding distribution by similar programs in the field; c) the feasibility, logistics and resources needed to enter each of the respective markets.
2. An internal SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis to evaluate Cedars readiness to take advantage of these opportunities, e.g., an assessment of the capacity of Cedars artists to meet increased demand; a review of organization staffing, structure and resources against what would be required to move forward.
3. Based on results of above, creation of a comprehensive business plan which would include a recommendation on best approach(es), financial projections, marketing, infrastructure, and staffing plans, and a detailed implementation schedule and timeline.
4. Prepare for launch. Implement start-up phase of the business plan, based on agreed upon recommendations. Will include funding of a project manager, and development of initial tools and materials that are integral to meeting the needs of each new market, e.g., an interactive website to enable potential customers nationwide to view and purchase products and the internal capacity to deliver those orders in a cost efficient and timely manner.
Specific competencies for a successful candidate include:
• Experience in marketing and product development
• Understanding of art sales, distribution, and trends
• Knowledge of best practices for creating saleable artwork
• Project management/business plan development experience
• Experience with digital technologies and software related to art sales (Shopify etc.)
• Knowledge of the services and systems that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
• Consulting experience
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Strong written communication skills
• Understanding of and passion for nonprofit work
