Position Title: Teaching Visual Artist In Detention Facilities

Reports To: Youth Studio Program Manager
Status: Non-exempt, Part-time
Schedule: Monday 3pm – 4:30pm
Thursday: 3pm – 4:30pm
Friday: 1:30 – 5pm
Saturday: 9:00

Plus additional paid classroom prep-time.
Location: Sonoma

Teaching Artist-Position Summary
The Imagine Bus Project is seeking an experienced and dynamic Teaching Artist to support our Juvenile Hall Arts Program in Sonoma County. We are looking to hire artists who have worked with underserved populations of youth, and have the ability to deliver our curriculum, Teaching Life Skills Through the Visual Arts, to meet the needs and abilities of youth in custody. Teaching Artists work in collaboration with the administrative staff of The Imagine Bus Project, and detention facility staff, to support the development and delivery of weekly creative life skills lessons,special art projects, and annual student art exhibitions.

Primary Responsibilities:
Instructional Duties

  • Plan, prepare, and instruct developmentally appropriate life skills lessons on a weekly basis, as outlined in our course curriculum.
  • Facilitate creative student projects, using high quality art materials, and aligned to our course curriculum, that promotes healthy self-expression, youth and personal development, and positive future orientation/goal-setting.
  • Provide dependable and dedicated youth guidance, overseeing all student projects to completion.
  • Support TIBP Staff with regular exhibition(s) of student artwork for the general public.

Administrative Duties

  • Submit creative briefs/project proposals, aligned to our course curriculum, in a timely manner to the Program Manager.
  • Manage supply ordering and procurement of art supplies, within an allocated supply budget.
  • Document and submit student creative process (e.g. photographs, scanned imagery, writing, etc.) to the main office.
  • Accurately track and submit weekly student attendance for each class session to Program Manager.
  • Participate in any teacher training sessions with TIBP Staff.
  • Prepare for in-unit classroom site-visits and teaching observation by TIBP Staff, Board Members, organizational stakeholders, and/or special guests.
  • Assist in evaluating program effectiveness, by facilitating in-unit student evaluations.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned. Availability for occasional evening and weekend work and for travel as needed.                                              


  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in the visual arts.
  • Experience supporting youth ages 14-17, one-on-one, and in small or large groups.
  • B.A. or currently enrolled in a degree program in Fine Arts, Arts Education, Art Therapy/Expressive Arts, or equivalent experience in a closely related field is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older, to work within our designated program sites.
  • Reliable transportation is needed, as some sites may not be easily accessible by public transit.
  • Demonstrated mastery in one or more of the following creative disciplines: drawing,painting, illustration/cartooning, sculpture and/or mixed media.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, high flexibility, and an ability to work well with staff while on a remote teaching assignment, and in a sometimes unpredictable teaching environment.
  • Knowledge and experience using a wide range of art media, techniques, and processes.
  • Knowledge and experience teaching core life skills (e.g. anger management, self-awareness, empathy, goal setting and achieving, etc.) using a trauma-informed approach for youth.
  • Experience and ability to sensitively work with youth across various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Experience working in a corrections and rehabilitation setting is highly preferred, but not required.
  • Must complete and retain security clearance, including a Department of Justice background check, 3 hour on-line training, as well as facility and organizational orientation sessions.

Brief Description on Youth Studio:
Youth Studio engages incarcerated youth in fine art as a vehicle for them to build upon life-skills they need to reduce their risk of recidivism. Each 90-minute session begins with an introduction to a life-skill that explicitly builds upon the most common criminogenic factors that lead to repeat offenses (anti-socialthinking, temperament, and associates) as well as the important non-cognitive skills like communication, decision-making, and empathy needed to be successful. The youth then engage in a corresponding fine art-project taught by community-based Teaching Artists who serve as strong role models and informal mentors. By introducing art materials, techniques, and the creative process in a formal large group setting, youth are exposed to positive methods for expression and communication and are inspired to discover their best-selves and yearn for a positive future.
