Experiences like the ‘Tubbs Fire’ that hit Santa Rosa serve to strengthen the ‘artist within me’. It foements subjective creative moments that utilize my past, present – and my future as focal lenses.

Spontaneously, I chose The San Francisco Art Institute over The Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Art Institute at Chicago for my formal Art education. I received my BFA in Interdisciplinary Art and Public Art. I’ve studied stone sculpture for 10 years with Master Sculpture-Ante’ Marinovic, one of Croatia’s premier stone sculptors and is considered a Croatian national treasure.

I explore the collaboration between artist, media and tool in such a fashion as to give rise to multiple layers of compressed info within each piece I create no matter if it is a purely visual work or an interactive space or environmental art form.

For me, art screams out into all aspects of my life. As an artist in western society, dogma and bravado go hand in hand with economic choice.

Art is my life. If it’s not nailed down or permanently affixed, it’s in trouble of becoming art resource material. Well, upon further review, even that won’t deter me from considering an objects use in an art piece.

Rivertown Revival Creative Design, Education, Environmental, Festivals/Markets, History/Heritage, Kids/Family, Music, Nonprofit, Performing Arts, Special Events, Visual Arts Rivertown Revival is an art and music festival designed to celebrate the Petaluma Slough (aka river). It is a fund raiser for Friends of the Petaluma River (FOPR), but also an off-shoot of its mission and programing. FOPR believes that if we can facilitate a love affair between the Community and the river, the Community will want to conserve and protect it for generations to come. With the support of music director Josh Windmiller we feature local bands in the Americana style of music and beyond. We have had local sculpture artists line our paths, and have featured multiple kinetic sculpture artists with large scale, and often interactive work. Artists who have participated in past festivals include: David Best, Scott Collinson, Kevin Clark, and Stephen Lockert. This year, thanks to the Creative Responders Grant, we will have an interactive art piece by Stephen Lockert, and a collaborative piece between visual artist Mae Blackmore and music by The Crux. Programming at this festival includes multiple playful opportunities to create something out of nothing. For instance, in the past we have invited attendees to pound metal into flowers for an 80 foot Flower Tower that was being built for Burning Man. We have encouraged participants to use provided ‘ingredients’ to contribute to a giant boat alter. We have taught children, and adults, how to make rope, tie sailing knots, juggle, make boats out of wine corks, dye cloth naturally, make puppets out of socks and hula hoops out of irrigation tubing. We are an eco-friendly event that is modeled after turn of the century river festivals so we avoid all things plastic and mass produced. We decorate the event with found and recycled materials only and like to brag that we turn trash into cool junk! ;) We create an environment where we encourage participants to imagine a world without televisions, iPhones and store bought toys. In a nutshell, we encourage participants to listen to music, get on the water, play, use their hands and make art.

Sara Downing is a Bay Area-based photographer, working in film and digital photography for over 25 years. Her images document a span of subjects, ranging from portraits to architecture to creative abstraction. Passionate about blending genres, she introduces a variety of mediums into her sculptural photographic work, including wool, paper, glass, ceramics, wood, metal, and polymers. Her photographs are included in numerous private art collections throughout the US. Sara is a former opera singer, event planner and product designer. She chose ceramics as her art form after a career in engineering and design, because she realized that clay is grounding. It is of the earth, and Jee’s intention is to bring the joy of that connection to the owners of her pieces. She specializes in hand carved designs that balance the orderly and the organic. About her work:

Fortunately (and unfortunately), ceramics is a highly process driven activity. There are at least six steps to make a single item, from weighing and wedging the clay to final firing, and that does not include the inactive time of waiting for the clay to get to the optimal state and checking on items to make sure they are drying properly. Porcelain is fussy and requires more attention than other clay bodies. Jee’s process includes the additional time consuming steps of carving and texturing her pieces and cleaning up those areas. Her glazing process is often meticulous. she uses color sparingly in a supportive role, so that the foci of her pieces are texture and carving. On average, a single piece will take several weeks before it is ready to be loved.

Jee has always been drawn to reductive sculpture because of its merciless process and often awe-inspiring results. Removing material in order to reveal a finished form requires deliberate actions with permanent consequences. There are no “do-overs.” Although working with clay is more forgiving than chipping away at stone, her work is reminiscent of reductive sculpture. She starts with a form, usually a functional vessel, examines the salient characteristics, and then carves away and texturize the surface to reveal a revised object that feels true to its essence. Unlike some sculpture her objects are meant to be touched and held, since utility is a core characteristic. Jee enjoys making useful objects that evoke emotion.

Kinetic Kompendium: 50 Years Of Kinetic Sculpture Racing book, published in January 2018. 600 page, full-color book documenting the history of the race, pilots and sculptures. Ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to print the first edition.
4-person amphibious quadricycle kinetic sculpture. Built a pivoting, 2-part kinetic sculpture from the ground up, including fiberglassing a built-in flotation hull.
