Sonoma County is home to more than 200 non-profit arts organizations along with 100s of other creative enterprises who work every day to enrich our lives with exhibits, performances, readings, happenings.  Sometimes, they are caretakers of our collective cultural identity.  Sometimes they are tour guides, leading us on an exploration into uncharted emotional waters.  And always, they are the critical threads that tie together the fabric of our creative community.  Browse this ever-growing gathering of our creative eco-system for ideas and opportunities.

Sonoma Community Center
Sonoma Community Center Adult Arts Education, Art Gallery, Creative Sonoma Grantee, Dance, Education, Fine Crafts, History/Heritage, Holidays Shop Local, Kids/Family, Music, Nonprofit, Visual Arts, Youth Arts Education For 70 years, the Sonoma Community Center has been the cultural heart and soul of the Sonoma Valley. Originally built as the Sonoma Grammar School in 1916, the Community Center was incorporated as a public benefit 501(c)3 organization in 1952, and is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. Today, the mission of the Sonoma Community Center is to cultivate a vibrant community through extraordinary creative, cultural, and learning experiences. Driven by values of community, innovation, creativity, inclusion, and leadership, the Center offers a broad range of programs, events, and performances that encourage people from all walks of life to create, connect, thrive, and build community together. We offer over 200 classes annually in ceramics, fine art, fiber art, music, movement, culinary arts, and writing. We also host an Artist-in-Residence program that attracts expert artists to work and teach at the Center. On campus, we house and maintain valued partnerships with the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, Crescent Montessori School, the Sonoma International Film Festival, Valley of the Moon Magazine, and Sonoma Arts Live, our theater production partner. Our Andrews Hall Theater offers a year-round schedule of films, live music, theater performances, and more for audiences of all ages. We host a variety of creative community events throughout the year, including our annual Día de los Muertos celebration in early November, and our free Thanksgiving Dinner, a valued community tradition for decades now. The Center is also an integral part of the City of Sonoma’s emergency preparedness plans; we serve on the City’s Disaster Council, and serve as the Emergency Volunteer Center for the City of Sonoma during local disasters and other emergencies.

Our Mission & Vision

Sonoma Conservatory of Dance fosters curiosity, creativity, joy and compassion, through the art and discipline of dance in a learning environment that ignites the creative spirit.

Our Story:

Originally Founded as Sonoma Ballet Conservatory in 1970, Patricia O’Reilly reenvisioned the studio as Sonoma Conservatory of Dance in 2005 after 12 years of directing the Vallejo Ballet Conservatory, which she had founded in 1993. Under the Artistic Direction of Ms. O’Reilly, SCD continues to offer the very highest quality classical ballet and dance instruction to youth and adults.

In 2016, Sonoma Conservatory of Dance transitioned into a public benefit corporation to better serve the community of Sonoma and to more effectively fulfill its mission of providing the youth (and adults) of Sonoma Valley and beyond an opportunity to grow artistically and technically through participation in our classes and productions.

As a nonprofit, we are able to serve as many students as possible regardless of financial circumstances. Our students grow as they train together under the mentorship of an excellent artistic staff who create an outstanding classroom environment as well as high-quality performances that we share with the public, thereby enhancing each student’s sense of self-mastery.

We expose students and audiences to a mix of culture through music, and dance and our full-length productions offer a blend of classical ballet with other cultural themes.  Through our performances, we provide the community with an opportunity to gather together and enjoy an inspiring, enchanting event.

The studio’s students have been accepted into the most prestigious dance programs both locally, nationally and internationally, including: American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Kaatsbaan Extreme Ballet, and Royal Ballet School of Antwerp.

Other Notable Programs Include:

Boston BalletLINES Ballet, Colorado Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Orlando Ballet, Ballet West, Nutmeg Conservatory of the Arts, The Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Dance, Marymount Manhattan College Dance Department, and The Royal Ballet School of London.

To date, SCD students have competed in the Genée International Ballet Competition, Youth America Grand Prix and the RAD Dance Challenge.

Welcome to Sonoma County Art Trails, the premier juried open studio tour which is held annually during the second and third weekends each October!  During Art Trails you can EXPLORE the scenic corridors and country roads; ENGAGE with the professional Art Trails artists in their studios; and COLLECT some wonderful art. Complimentary full color Collector’s Guide, including maps and artists’ information are available in Septament at Sebastopol Center for the Arts, galleries, cafes and shops throughout Sonoma County.  Or on-line at www.SonomaCountyArtTrails.org   Many Art Trails artists are open year-round by appointment so keeping your Collector’s Guide handy is always a good idea. Typically there are 140-150 artists who open their studios during Art Trails.  Art mediums include: Painting, print-making, sculpture, ceramics, fiber arts, fine jewelry, art glass, mixed media, woodwork, mosaic and photography. Studios are located throughout Sonoma County from Petaluma to Geyserville and the town of Sonoma to Bodega Bay.  Art Trails and the Jury Process Each participating artist has been juried into Art Trails.  New artists apply by submitting an application, a description of their art medium and processes, images of their work, and one representative original piece of art work.  A new jury is convened each year comprised of art experts and two rotating Art Trails members. While viewing the images, jurors are given information from the artist’s application on size, materials and techniques.  After viewing the images and the original piece of art, jurors score each applicant on quality, creativity, coherent individual style, craftsmanship and professionalism of presentation.  There are no quotas for acceptance imposed in any given medium or overall. The Art Trails Experience Each year 50,000 full color Collector’s Guides are printed and distributed to people who enjoy and appreciate art.  During Art Trails blue Art Trails signs help guide visitors on their self-guided tour.  Every year new people, from students, to out of town visitors, and local residents discover the rich and vibrant art culture Art Trails brings to Sonoma County.  You will want to make sure to Mark Your Calendar and Bring Your Friends as you engulf yourself in this fantastic Art Trails experience.  You’ll be glad you did! Sonoma County Dance Beat
Sonoma County Dance Beat Dance, Education, Music, Nonprofit Sonoma County Dance Beat, created in 2014 by local dancers, Kevin and Ann Hutchinson, to provide a comprehensive calendar for dancers to find live dance music in Sonoma County, has grown into a multi-faceted organization serving musicians, venues, dancers and music lovers by supporting live music in Sonoma County through a variety of services. Services include talent buying, marketing consulting for venues and musicians, dance instruction and demos at live music events, stage-presence coaching, choreography for music videos, advocacy and education, and so much more.
Sonoma County Writers Camp
Sonoma County Writers Camp Education, Literature/Poetry, Special Events Sonoma County Writers Camp, a five-day writing retreat in Occidental, California, takes place two or three times a year. Small generative writing workshops led by Ellen Sussman and Elizabeth Stark, both acclaimed authors and popular teachers. Panel discussions with agents, authors and editors, master classes. Sonoma Plein Air Foundation
Sonoma Plein Air Foundation Art Gallery, Education, Foundation, Nonprofit, Special Events, Visual Arts The Sonoma Plein Air Foundation facilitates artists, art organizations, public schools and the community to create, appreciate and understand the importance of visual arts. We seek to engage youth through art education, foster artistic excellence, nurture a vibrant local arts community and bring people together for experiences that inspire a creative exchange of ideas. The Sonoma Plein Air Festival brings acclaimed artists to Sonoma for a week in September to paint, show and sell their work to benefit youth art education in Sonoma.
Sonoma Valley Education Foundation
Sonoma Valley Education Foundation Education, Nonprofit The Sonoma Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) is the primary organization channeling community funding to Sonoma Valley public schools. SVEF supports the Sonoma Valley Unified School District in developing the next generation of leaders in our community, preparing students for today's fast paced world by providing rich academic programs and student enrichment that includes critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.      
Sonoma Valley Museum of Art

SVMA serves the Sonoma Valley region and a wide range of visitors from, primarily, the Bay Area, but also from across the nation and the globe. Founded in 1998, SVMA is the region’s only modern and contemporary art museum providing arts and humanities interpretive programming and experiences. SVMA’s steady growth confirms the strong need and desire for its presence and service to the community and field. In addition to presenting art and culture from across the nation and, at times, from around the world, the Museum annually presents at least one exhibition with a broad depth and range of interpretive programming that highlights the distinct, influential, cultural and artistic heritage of California. With a modest seven full-time and two part-time staff, over 75 volunteers, and an engaged board of directors, SVMA produces model arts and humanities education along with highly respected exhibitions, inspiring cultural conversations that stimulate critical thinking and discussion surrounding contemporary issues of our day. Through its education efforts, SVMA provides free arts education for 4th- and 5th-graders in all Sonoma Valley schools (700-750 students) and averages hosting 75 public programs annually—a great feat for a small staff. SVMA’s library serves as an arts public reference source with a collection of over 2,500 art, architecture, and design books available to scholars and the public. SVMA also works with the Sonoma local government to spearhead activities that explore the art and heritage of the area, including the popular Sonoma Art Walk and public art exhibitions in Sonoma Plaza which, pre-COVID19, engage over 1,000 visitors a day in summer and fall months.  
Spark Whole Student Learning
Spark Whole Student Learning Education Spark Whole Student Learning empowers students through one-to-one and small group tutoring sessions, workshops, test prep, and K-12th grade summer courses, with a special focus on building confidence, executive functioning, and self-advocacy skills. We also offer teacher, parent, and community collaboration, consultations, workshops, and trainings.
Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods
Stewards Of The Coast And Redwoods Education, Environmental, Nonprofit, Special Events Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods (Stewards) is a non-profit organization that partners with the Russian River Sector of California State Parks. The sector includes Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve (outside Guerneville), Austin Creek State Recreation Area (a park Stewards is now operating), Sonoma Coast State Park (from Bodega Bay to Jenner) and includes the Willow Creek watershed. State Parks depends on Stewards to provide funding for the Volunteers in Parks program, educational and interpretive activities, for resource management and stewardship projects, and to assist in the development of interpretive facilities and displays. The State Parks of Sonoma County's coast and Russian River valley are rich in natural and cultural history, biological diversity and distinctive geology. Our mission is to promote education, preservation and restoration of the natural and cultural resources of Russian River area State Parks through interpretation and public stewardship. We do this (with the help of 300 volunteers) by providing park visitors of all ages with a variety of programs and opportunities to experience and explore these exceptional parks. Donate today! With your support, Stewards is protecting Austin Creek State Recreation Area with volunteer patrols and stewardship support. We have reopened Bullfrog Pond Campground and three backcountry campsites. We are providing public access and programs in closed areas on the Sonoma Coast, as well as contining all our existing education and stewardship programs during these unprecedented times. Stewards is excited to launch our new Marine Education Program in 2014. We will continue to support efforts to secure a sustainable funding source for our state parks. All donations will help us achieve our goal of keeping your parks open and thriving.
Storybook Children's Theatre Creative Arts Academy

SCT is dedicated to supporting the ARTS through advocacy, research, scholarship, and community partnerships. SCT provides immersion in creative arts, theatre, dance, literature, public speaking, community engagement, and leadership. Our supportive environment encourages self discipline, problem solving, taking risks, meeting challenges, and teamwork. SCT strives to enhance the quality of life in the North Bay by presenting imaginative, diverse, artistic experiences for the community through education, events, civic participation, and performance.  Coming soon to downtown Santa Rosa!

Teen Services Sonoma
Teen Services Sonoma Education, Nonprofit, Nonprofit Services

Dubbed The Tree of Possibilities, this 13-foot kinetic sculpture is made of recycled bicycle parts and culinary items representing our two social enterprises: Operation Bicycle and the Lovin’ Oven. It was created by metal sculptor Marty Munson, assisted by two teens - Alondra Perez and Leila Whitney. Together, the three determined the general design of the tree and the teens learned about weight, balance, form and space, as well as a variety of welding techniques. Hanging from the tree are flattened spoons and metal leaves imprinted with words about teen hopes and dreams for the future.

In March 2020, Sonoma Valley teens were ready to create their leaves and share their sentiments. Stamping was to take place at Teen Services, Sonoma Valley and Creekside High Schools, Mentoring Alliance locations, Art Escape, and Boys & Girls Club (The Club) organized by fine artist, Pat Meier-Johnson. COVID-19 interrupted those plans and the scheduled installation and ribbon-cutting. It was decided to install the tree and teens would add leaves to the sculpture during the following months.

Despite the interruption, Meier-Johnson was excited to see the Tree come to fruition. “Never did I dream that my whimsical idea would turn into such a beautiful structure, providing young people a way to leave their mark on the world as part of a huge, beautiful, kinetic sculpture for all to see.”

TSS Executive Director, Becky Jo Peterson agrees: “Marty was an amazing mentor to the teens and we hope the community will enjoy the sculpture and the words of teens in the Valley.”

From start to finish, this project was captured on film by video producer and journalist Russell Johnson, to document the entire project. "It was great to tell the story of the sculpture coming together under Marty Munson who shared with the young team the creative process including stamping, welding. fabricating, and balancing used recycled culinary equipment and bicycle parts," said Johnson.

Alondra Perez will begin her studies in engineering this fall and enjoyed working on the project. “Not only did I learn some new skills, but the Tree is an artistic way for teens to have their voices heard.

The Arlene Francis Center For Spirit, Art And Politics Dance, Education, Film/Video, Foundation, Literature/Poetry, Media, Music, Nonprofit, Performing Arts, Special Events, Theatre, Visual Arts Founded in 2008, the Arlene Francis Center for Spirit, Art and Politics' objective has been to create a spiritual progressive space that links art, music, theater, film, poetry, education and community action with the creation of a more loving and socially connected world. All of our events reflect our spiritual-political vision, and our aim is to create a unique, receptive, heartfelt, authentic Presence that is capable of radiating an influence reflective of our common vision in Sonoma County, and across Northern California, and the wider world through the internet and word-of-mouth. The AFC: An Innovative Center for Social Change The Arlene Francis Center for Spirit, Art and Politics is an innovative project for many reasons. These include our philosophical approach to community building and social change, our physical presence and our cultural, educational and activist programming. First, there is our philosophy of "Spiritual Activism" which guides our action. Spiritual Activism is the term we have given to the vision of social change -- a vision that emphasizes the link between social activism and the creation of an authentic, socially and ecologically connected community. Second, to carry out our vision, we are lucky to have a remarkable building that was originally a flour mill in the 19th century and has gone through a number of incarnations since then, eventually serving as a brewery and winery in the 198o's and early 1990's. The Arlene Francis Foundation acquired the building in 1996 for the purpose of providing educational and cultural activities to benefit Sonoma County, and from 1997-2008 the Foundation partnered with San Francisco's progressive New College of California to offer bachelor's and master's degrees in Culture, Ecology, and Sustainable Community. Finally, with our presence and programs, we have created a positive reputation and relationship with the local community and beyond. The Arlene has repeatedly been honored as The Best Damn Place in Santa Rosa by the local alternative paper The Bohemian, and Martin Hamilton and the Arlene Francis Center were given a Boho Award for making significant contribution to the arts in the North Bay. The Arlene Francis Center for Spirit, Art, & Politics seeks to be a wonderful synthesis of artistic, educational, spiritual and cultural projects that will contribute significantly to the social and political life of Santa Rosa and the surrounding area. Our aim in designing the Center has been to avoid creating a smorgasbord of well-meaning progressive activities, each operating under its own unstated assumptions about how best to achieve positive change. Instead, we have sought to explicitly articulate a unifying vision that joins all our activities as a multi­-faceted expression of our mission and philosophy. We are convinced that lasting social change adequate to the challenges facing humanity at this moment will only be achieved through transforming human relationships so as to overcome the fear that divides us and enables us to become present to each other in a new and affirming way.
The Art Room, Petaluma
The Art Room, Petaluma Business, Education, Kids/Family, School, Special Events, Visual Arts The Art Room offers private or semi-private mixed media and ceramics classes for people of all ages. Summer art camps for children are offered as well. Art experiences are process-oriented and encourage personal expression, creativity, and critical thinking. Students are introduced to amazing artists and art styles from around the world, instructed on various techniques for using their art media of choice, and finally guided, as needed, through the process of creating their masterpiece. Students are also encouraged to display and share their work when possible. The Art Room founder, Linsey Larimore, also specializes in creative curriculum development. As a former elementary school teacher, Larimore creates arts based lessons and units of study that are integrated with academic curriculum, like social studies, math, or science. She also creates unique projects for special events or thematic birthday parties.

With the highest artistic standards and the regions most talented theatre artists, we produce a professional season of ambitious performances in search of what is best in ourselves and in the human spirit. The California Indian Museum and Cultural Center
The California Indian Museum And Cultural Center Adult Arts Education, Education, Festivals/Markets, Film/Video, History/Heritage, Holidays Shop Local, Museum, Museum and Gallery Memberships, Nonprofit, Special Events, Youth Arts Education The purpose of the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center is to culturally enrich and benefit the people of California and the general public. The goals of the Museum and Cultural Center are to educate the public about California Indian history and cultures, to showcase California Indian cultures, to enhance and facilitate these cultures and traditions through educational and cultural activities, to preserve and protect California Indian cultural and intellectual properties, and to develop relationships with other indigenous groups and other traditional and ecological advocates.
The Imagine Bus Project
The Imagine Bus Project Education, Nonprofit, Nonprofit Services, Visual Arts Through arts education and community partnerships, The Imagine Bus Project engages and inspires incarcerated youth, and youth impacted by the juvenile justice system. We enable self-expression and positive personal development so that young people can successfully re-enter their communities and find a path to a fulfilling future. THE IMAGINE BUS PROJECT ENVISIONS: Juvenile Justice system-entangled youth who are able to express themselves creatively and healthfully, take risks safely, and plan for a fulfilling, positive future. Involvement in the Juvenile Justice system as an opportunity for personal reflection, transformation and growth for adjudicated young people. Our program model demonstrating achievement of healthy self-expression, improved personal development, a positive future orientation; and, can be replicated or adapted to reach more system-involved youth. The Imagine Bus Project delivers cross-cultural learning experiences that focus on relationship building and art as tools for problem solving. We focus on exposing youth to creative opportunities and artists with the belief that art has the power to save lives and put adjudicated youth on a path towards a future in which they are healthy and empowered to lead creative and productive lives. TIBP’s Theory of Change models that youth need a creative vehicle to build confidence through creativity, develop meaningful skills through their craft, and connect with their communities in order to break the cycle of incarceration The Imagine Bus Project is a Creative Sonoma Arts Education Integration Grantee, to support the Youth Studio visual arts program in Sonoma County's Los Guilicos Juvenile Justice Center and Sonoma Probation Camp.
The Imaginists

We honor the power of live performance as a vital space for ideas, questions, and communication. Led by co-founders & directors Brent Lindsay and Amy Pinto and based in Santa Rosa, CA., the Imaginists is an experimental theatre company that explores the intersection of art, activism, and community. The Imaginists have been creating place-based theatre for over ten years, six at our Santa Rosa base. Our innovative, often community-specific and site-specific, work has led to groundbreaking collaborations that investigate participation on many levels. From bilingual works and community projects to ensemble devised creations, the Imaginists investigate and upend dominant narrative in artistic form and story, re-imagine public space, and cultivate radical inclusion in making works of art. We honor the power of live performance to create a vital space, a living story.

The Monarch Project Arts Council/Alliance, Association/Club/Group/Guild, Creative Design, Education, Film/Video, Fine Crafts, Kids/Family, Nonprofit, School, Visual Arts The Monarch Project aims to spread a message of love and acceptance for immigrants, regardless 0f their documentation,  all across Sonoma County and beyond. Our artists and activists paint monarch butterflies on the walls of businesses, libraries, all kinds of other public places. Each butterfly comes with a QR code that will bring them to this page where the locations of all the others are displayed, and the story of each butterfly is told. We challenge everyone to find these butterflies and to listen to the stories they represent. If you are a business, organization, or individual interesting in hosting a butterfly, please get in touch with us! Sonoma County has been and continues to be a county of immigrants. In today’s volatile political climate, the basic rights of immigrants are being violated. We believe that immigrants are a key part of our society and economy and we refuse to allow such injustices to continue. We believe that people outweigh politics and that protecting the human rights of immigrants should not be a partisan affair. We envision a future in which immigrants are celebrated for their invaluable presence in our society, and a future in which our undocumented peers no longer have to live in fear and hiding.

Valley Of The Moon Music Festival Education, Festivals/Markets, Holidays Shop Local, Music, Nonprofit, Performing Arts Membership or Season Tickets, Special Events The mission of the Valley of the Moon Music Festival is to bring the unique sound of Classical, Romantic and post-Romantic chamber music on period instruments to audiences in Sonoma and beyond, and to expand the horizons of up-and-coming chamber musicians in our Apprenticeship and TANK Trust Laureate Programs. Each July, in the town of Sonoma, in a series of concerts over three weekends, we bring an international roster of experts in period performance together with highly talented emerging artists to bring a familiar repertoire into a brilliant new light. The concert experience is enhanced by the very popular Blattner Lecture Series that puts the listening experience into historical and cultural perspective. In our Apprentice and TANK Trust Laureate Programs, we mentor emerging musicians, helping to ensure that period performance of Classical and Romantic music will continue to delight audiences far into the future. Our Festival was conceived and born in Sonoma, and Sonoma is at the center of our artistic efforts. We are honored to have a thriving and ongoing relationship with the local community through partnerships with local businesses, other non-profits, and community leaders.
