Joel Baumgardner, Architect, AIA, LEED AP BD+C Joel is an award-winning architect with over 25 years of experience working on a wide range of residential and commercial projects. He uses his experience, diversity of viewpoint, a deep-rooted environmentalism, delight in art and built form as key guiding principles. Diversity of Experience and Viewpoint Joel has been drawing and designing for as long as he can remember. First with wood blocks, then LEGOs, models, tree houses, drafting classes in junior high and high school, and art classes in college. Summers in high school were spent working at the local Sonoma County hardware store, absorbing the elements of building. While at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Joel spent summers working construction jobs and drafting. Further developing his love of architecture, was the year spent abroad in Florence, Italy–balancing the technical rigors of Cal Poly with art and history. These experiences formed the foundation for Joel’s unique perspective, sense of awareness and balance, and diversity of viewpoint. Environmentalism Growing up in the beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area, and Sebastopol in particular, led to an inherent appreciation of our connection to nature. Fascinated by passive solar design while in college, Joel expanded his green building knowledge by completing a year of study at Sonoma State University‘s Green Building Professional program. Since then, Joel has co-chaired the American Institute of Architects San Francisco Committee on the Environment, as well as the United States Green Building Council Northern California Chapter – State Legislative Task Force. Delight Joel believes that architecture should lift the spirit as an everyday experience. It should surprise and delight. Timeless beauty is stronger than stylistic trends. There must be art in the architecture. His work is rooted in an organic sense of beauty-scale, proportion and detail that inherently connect and resonate.

Chalk Hill Artist Residency

Chalk Hill Artist Residency is a unique opportunity for artists across mediums to work and stay at the beautiful Warnecke Ranch and Vineyard.

The program is located in Sonoma County, an hour and a half north of San Francisco. Artists from a diverse range of abilities and geographical locations are able to find the space and time needed to pursue creative work. Chalk Hill Artist Residency offers the use of the artist house, studio space, and access to the ranch property. The property's oak woodlands, hiking trails, vineyards, and private access to the Russian River are sources of inspiration for residents

Founded in 2010, Chalk Hill Residency is inspired by the vision of the late John Carl Warnecke, internationally renowned architect (1919-2010). In 1983, he laid out plans for an art colony on his 280-acre property near the town of Healdsburg, bordering the Russian River. He established a 501c3 non-profit and began a master plan for the property to fulfill his vision: that artists could live and work together in what he deemed as the most beautiful place in the world. ​

​Our community partnerships allow us to work closely with organizations that support artists with disabilities to participate in studio days at the residency. Studio days bring together our current artist in residence and artists with disabilities to spend an afternoon in the studio together. This creates a space where artists across a spectrum of ability are able to create authentic human connection through art, celebrate individual ways of artistic expression, and foster creativity. Since 2010, the studio program has proven to be nationally recognized and has been enthusiastically received by participants.

ECOSTRUCTION
ECOSTRUCTION Association/Club/Group/Guild, Business, Decorative Arts, Environmental, Fine Crafts, Interior Design Since 1996, Ecostruction has been designing, building and planning sustainable commercial and residential buildings.  These include New and remodeled residences and commercial building such as wineries, retail shops, and manufacturing facilities.  We currently pride ourselves in limiting construction debris and/or recycling the waste to a remarkable 85% or higher.  We use FAS certified framing materials, Eterna Block (formally called RASTRA) , Bamcore bamboo plywood, strawbale and rammed earth building products.  We install solar PV and solar heated hotwater in almost all of our designs.  and, to date, we have not installed a single A/C unit into the house we have built.  This is due to the high thermal mass of our buildings.  In 2010 we constructed the most pointed LEED platinum home in the Nation.

Escolar is an art and design research collective working at the intersection of regenerative agriculture and cultural production within an anti-capitalist and de-colonial framework.

We maintain a curatorial practice and an exhibition venue, a residency with production facilities and support, provide design and fabrication support for local activists and maintain a one-acre experimental farm with an emphasis on native flora.

-We provide housing, food and production support for visiting and local artists.

-We produce public art exhibitions and complementary workshops, talks and symposiums.

-We foster a symbiotic relationship between cultural, agricultural and land-use practices.

-We build linkages between theoretical and material labor/ modes of work.

GreenLynx Business, Environmental, Fine Crafts, Retail GreenLynx provides interesting reclaimed items from the built environment at our store in Santa Rosa. We have building materials and supplies for creative folks who are looking to make something from salvaged materials. We welcome artists and craftsman to check out our store for unique finds. We keep lists of wanted materials in case we come across them in our salvage and deconstruction work.

NorCal Public Media is a highly visible local arts, cultural, educational, news, and community information media hub, offering a unique service to the Bay Area in order to encourage full participation in community and society. NorCal Public Media expands options in providing and responding to new technologies through enhancement of technological functions and equipment. Pepperwood
Pepperwood Education, Environmental, Kids/Family, Nonprofit, Sports/Outdoors Pepperwood is a non-profit organization, and our mission is to inspire conservation through science. Located in the heart of Sonoma County— a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot— Pepperwood manages a 3,200-acre biological preserve and the Dwight Center for Conservation Science. An important refuge for more than 900 species of native plants and wildlife, the preserve serves as a living laboratory hosting researchers from around the world. The Dwight Center has become a hub for ecological education and a conservation think tank. For more than a decade Pepperwood has worked to connect children, youth, and adults with nature. The purpose of the Inspiring Connections with Nature Initiative is to connect people to nature and inspire a lifelong conservation ethic through exploration, observation, science, and artistic expression. It will build upon current programming that includes our Students Conducting Environmental Inquiry (SCENIQ) program for elementary school children, TeenNat for youth ages 8-18, summer youth institutes, family-oriented outdoor experiences, and a host of community education classes and retreats. New and expanded activities through 2025 will include: partnerships with visual arts organizations to host art installations and gallery shows at Pepperwood; a new performing arts series on the preserve; new opportunities for filmmakers, photographers, and other visual artists to engage with the land; new outreach to local Latinx audiences; and potential partnerships with digital media experts to virtually amplify our programming. This timely initiative will encourage children, youth, and adults of diverse backgrounds to actively engage with the outdoors, learn about the natural world, and be inspired to protect nature and live sustainably.

We believe this facilitates healing of the divisions within our diverse communities.

Experiences like the ‘Tubbs Fire’ that hit Santa Rosa serve to strengthen the ‘artist within me’. It foements subjective creative moments that utilize my past, present – and my future as focal lenses.

Spontaneously, I chose The San Francisco Art Institute over The Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Art Institute  at Chicago for my formal Art education. I received my BFA in Interdisciplinary Art and Public Art. I’ve studied stone sculpture for 10 years with Master Sculpture-Ante’ Marinovic, one of Croatia’s premier stone sculptors and is considered a Croatian national treasure.

I explore the collaboration between artist, media and tool in such a fashion as to give rise to multiple layers of compressed info within each piece I create no matter if it is a purely visual work or an interactive space or environmental art form.

For me, art screams out into all aspects of my life. As an artist in western society, dogma and bravado go hand in hand with economic choice.

Art is my life. If it’s not nailed down or permanently affixed,  it’s in trouble of becoming art resource material. Well, upon further review, even that won’t deter me from considering an objects use in an art piece.
Rivertown Revival
Rivertown Revival Creative Design, Education, Environmental, Festivals/Markets, History/Heritage, Kids/Family, Music, Nonprofit, Performing Arts, Special Events, Visual Arts Rivertown Revival is an art and music festival designed to celebrate the Petaluma Slough (aka river).  It is a fund raiser for Friends of the Petaluma River (FOPR), but also an off-shoot of its mission and programing. FOPR believes that if we can facilitate a love affair between the Community and the river, the Community will want to conserve and protect it for generations to come. With the support of music director Josh Windmiller we feature local bands in the Americana style of music and beyond.  We have had local sculpture artists line our paths, and have featured multiple kinetic sculpture artists with large scale, and often interactive work.  Artists who have participated in past festivals include: David Best, Scott Collinson, Kevin Clark, and Stephen Lockert. This year, thanks to the Creative Responders Grant, we will have an interactive art piece by Stephen Lockert,  and a collaborative piece between visual artist Mae Blackmore and music by The Crux. Programming at this festival includes multiple playful opportunities to create something out of nothing.  For instance, in the past we have invited attendees to pound metal into flowers for an 80 foot Flower Tower that was being built for Burning Man.  We have encouraged participants to use provided ‘ingredients’ to contribute to a giant boat alter.  We have taught children, and adults,  how to make rope, tie sailing knots, juggle, make boats out of wine corks, dye cloth naturally, make puppets out of socks and hula hoops out of irrigation tubing. We are an eco-friendly event that is modeled after turn of the century river festivals so  we avoid all things plastic and mass produced.  We decorate the event with found and recycled materials only and like to brag that we turn trash into cool junk! ;) We create an environment where we encourage participants to imagine a world without televisions, iPhones and store bought toys.  In a nutshell, we encourage participants to listen to music,  get on the water, play, use their hands and make art.

Sara Downing is a Bay Area-based photographer, working in film and digital photography for over 25 years. Her images document a span of subjects, ranging from portraits to architecture to creative abstraction. Passionate about blending genres, she introduces a variety of mediums into her sculptural photographic work, including wool, paper, glass, ceramics, wood,  metal, and polymers. Her photographs are included in numerous private art collections throughout the US. Sara is a former opera singer, event planner and product designer. With this commercial experience, she brings a diverse set of skills and interests to her work. Working for corporate and private clients across the US, she has been commissioned to produce site-specific installations. Her large-scale three-dimensional artwork blends architectural forms and human constructs with imagery. With an equal love for image-making and surprising audiences, her work proposes physically immersive ways to experience photography.

Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods
Stewards Of The Coast And Redwoods Education, Environmental, Nonprofit, Special Events Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods (Stewards) is a non-profit organization that partners with the Russian River Sector of California State Parks. The sector includes Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve (outside Guerneville), Austin Creek State Recreation Area (a park Stewards is now operating), Sonoma Coast State Park (from Bodega Bay to Jenner) and includes the Willow Creek watershed. State Parks depends on Stewards to provide funding for the Volunteers in Parks program, educational and interpretive activities, for resource management and stewardship projects, and to assist in the development of interpretive facilities and displays. The State Parks of Sonoma County's coast and Russian River valley are rich in natural and cultural history, biological diversity and distinctive geology. Our mission is to promote education, preservation and restoration of the natural and cultural resources of Russian River area State Parks through interpretation and public stewardship. We do this (with the help of 300 volunteers) by providing park visitors of all ages with a variety of programs and opportunities to experience and explore these exceptional parks. Donate today! With your support, Stewards is protecting Austin Creek State Recreation Area with volunteer patrols and stewardship support. We have reopened Bullfrog Pond Campground and three backcountry campsites. We are providing public access and programs in closed areas on the Sonoma Coast, as well as contining all our existing education and stewardship programs during these unprecedented times. Stewards is excited to launch our new Marine Education Program in 2014. We will continue to support efforts to secure a sustainable funding source for our state parks. All donations will help us achieve our goal of keeping your parks open and thriving.

After nearly two years of exploring – during which he experienced, saw, and tasted much of what the world had to offer – Vegar discovered the irrepressible desire in him to photograph. For Vegar photography developed beyond an avocation, into both a profession and a lifelong passion. Vegar strongly believes in creating a collaborative environment on his shoots and is known in the industry for the subtle, yet effective ways in which he directs his talent and crew. His ability to capture spontaneous and authentic moments – without sacrificing technical or aesthetic perfection – is a testament not only to Vegar’s professionalism but also to that of his team. His personable approach makes for a fun and relaxed atmosphere, regardless of the size and complexity of a production.
Western Hills Garden
Western Hills Garden Decorative Arts, Education, Environmental, History/Heritage, Museum, Nonprofit, Visual Arts Founded in 1959, Western Hills Garden is a three-acre property in Occidental, CA with a critically important collection of rare ornamental plants and trees from around the world. It was transformed from pastureland and redwoods into an incredible example of cultivated biodiversity by Lester Hawkins and Marshall Olbrich. Over their 30+ year tenure they became experts in garden design and botany and inspired new ways of thinking about horticulture on the West Coast, with the garden as their studio, laboratory, and gathering space. More recent owners made key improvements that extended the Garden’s legacy.  In September 2021, the property was purchased by Kent Strader and Hadley Dynak who are running it as a nonprofit (currently through a fiscal sponsorship) for the first time in its 60+ year history. Strategic goals are to preserve the collection, increase the public’s access to the garden, and create unique onsite experiences that link people, plants, and place with possibility. The public can engage via a range of programming: self-guided day visits, group tours, educational workshops, and artist residencies.
