Artstart provides job training in the arts for Sonoma County youth while creating public art.

We offer art apprenticeship programs in which young artists ages 14 to 21 are guided by professional artists to work on commissioned projects including (but not limited to) murals (temporary and permanent), signage, mosaics, park benches and garden and interior furniture, garden stepping stones, neighborhood little trading posts (lending libraries), creatively painted dog houses, sculpture, tiled/mosaic backsplashes and tabletops. We also specialize in mosaic memorials.

November Apprenticeship Session

Program description

November 2 – 24, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, 2 pm to 6 pm or 4 pm to 6 pm.

Ages 13-21

Our month-long apprenticeship sessions aim to provide professional artistic mentorship to the creative youth of Sonoma County.

Each apprentice is assigned to a lead artist, and as a team they work on an assigned job. These jobs have been commissioned by private clients, or are funded by a grant. Jobs range in medium and scale from glass and tile mosaic fountains, benches, and stepping stones for a clients garden, to painted lending libraries or park benches, to massive murals on corporate buildings.

Applicants must submit an application form and a portfolio to demonstrate their individual skills, which is used to assess which applicant is best suited to each job available at the time of session.

Through their work with Artstart, apprentices will learn the time and planning that goes into commissioned professional art. Designing, choosing and mixing colors, manual fabrication with power tools, communicating with clients, and managing the timeline of a job, are all aspects of professional art practice that the apprentice will have exposure to.

Each apprentice is expected to treat the program like a job. They should be on time and focused, and if they must miss a day for any reason, should inform their lead artist or the program director ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.

Apprentices are paid a small stipend for their participation (around $250, prorated for any days that an apprentice might miss).

Please visit our website for application materials and portfolio instructions.
