Santa Rosa Symphony Institute for Music Education

Santa Rosa Symphony Institute for Music Education

The Santa Rosa Symphony Institute for Music Education has been widely recognized for having one of the most comprehensive music education programs in California, serving educators, families and nearly 20,000 students annually. Integrated programs are designed for K-12 young people beginning with Free Concerts for Youth and progress through Training Young Musicians and Community Outreach. Whether it’s training musicians of the future or fostering a love of music and a lifetime involvement with the musical arts, the Symphony’s commitment is unwavering.

Music For Our Schools

Music For Schools has four components that can assist teachers in the great work they are doing to provide musical experiences for their students. The programs reach approximately 30,000 elementary school children each year and includes the Elementary School Listening Program, field trips to concerts at Weill Hall, tickets for the Santa Rosa Symphony Discovery concerts, and a two year music immersion program. The programs are all at no or low cost to the schools.

Training Young Musicians

The Santa Rosa Symphony offers opportunities for beginners to advanced students, including a full complement of six youth ensembles and a three-week Summer Music Academy.  The ensembles have a place for children between the ages of 5 and 23.  String Orchestra Workshop is a non-auditioned group for beginners.  The Debut Youth Orchestra, Aspirante Youth Orchestra and Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra all provide successive training. The Young People’s Chamber Orchestra is a conductor-less string orchestra. Saturday Morning Jazz accepts intermediate to advanced students of any instrument.

Music For Our Schools

Program description

Music For Our Schools has several components that can assist teachers in the great work they are doing to provide musical experiences for their students:

  1. Elementary School Listening Program: Schools receive five years worth of daily listening for their students.  The children hear the same 5 minute clip each day for a week accompanied by a script that varies with each day. Cost: $350 for the initial five years.  Schools can renew for another five years at the cost of $100.
  2. Free Concerts For Youth: These are field trips to Weill Hall at the Green Music Center to see and hear one of three orchestras  – the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Aspirante Youth Orchestra and the SRSYO (Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra).  The programs are lively and engaging .  The SRSYO concert, usually at the end of April, includes a feature call IGNITE, in which classes can play recorder or sing the designated song from their seats in the hall accompanied by the orchestra onstage. The Symphony provides teacher’s guides and recorders for rent/purchase in preparation for this event.
  3. Youth Discovery Cards: Teachers can request cards for their students which allow one child and one accompanying adult to attend the Discovery Dress rehearsals of the Santa Rosa Symphony.
  4. Performance Assemblies: Schools can book in-school performance assemblies featuring one of four “music families”, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussion.
  5. It’s Elementary: Schools can apply to become a two year partner with the Santa Rosa Symphony!  This program provides the above 4 programs at no cost to the school. Additionally, schools receive 5 performance assemblies over the course of the two years.

Written materials are bilingual.
