Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Through the Eyes of Children

Presented by Healdsburg Jazz at Online/Virtual Space

Healdsburg Jazz is proud to present a family concert titled “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Through the Eyes of Children” on the birthdate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., January 15, 2021, at 7 PM and again on January 16, 2021, at 12 Noon.

The concert is a 1-hour music and spoken word performance inspired by and dedicated to the legacy of MLK and the music of the Civil Rights Movement. We are excited to do this in collaboration with Stanford‘s King Research & Education Institute.
We are honored to feature the amazing vocalists Kim Nalley and Tiffany Austin, who have each championed freedom songs and black liberation music their entire careers. The performance will include such important songs as “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,” “I Wish I Knew How it Feels to be Free,” “I Woke up this Morning with My Mind Stayed on Freedom,” and more. Pianist Tammy Lynn Hall will perform her original arrangement of “We Shall Overcome” and poet Enid Pickett will perform her commissioned poem titled “118 Days,” about the Children’s March in 1963 in Birmingham Alabama. Other musicians include drummer Genius Wesley and bassist Marcus Shelby.

“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Through the Eyes of Children” will be filmed at The Sound Room in Oakland, CA, directed by filmmaker Kevin Johnson.
