Dyeing Flora: A Presentation with Fiber Artist Sheng Lor

Dyeing Flora: A Presentation with Fiber Artist Sheng Lor

Presented by Chalk Hill Artist Residency at Online/Virtual Space

Sheng Lor is a Hmong-American artist based in San Francisco, CA. Her process-driven practice combines thread, natural dyes, and visual language to explore new narratives through cloth.

Sheng came to Chalk Hill to embark on a new body of work Dyeing Flora, which she began by foraging local flora for dyes during her stay at the residency. This project is an inquiry into the impact of textile production on communities and the environment, by looking at the reverse- how the environment impacts the textile process. She is currently in the process of weaving a new piece using fiber she dyed during her exploration at Chalk Hill. This new work demonstrates the climate resiliency of certain sites based on their dyeing flora.

During her presentation, Sheng will talk about about this current project and her time at Chalk Hill Artist Residency, as well the broader scope of her work, and her inspirations. An artist Q&A will follow the presentation.
