“Call For Artists” For the Trashion Fashion Show

It’s that time of year to start diving into your recycle bin, saving your excess trash, and daydreaming about couture creations.  The Sonoma Community Center is gearing up for the 10th annual Trashion Fashion Runway Show scheduled Saturday, April 4 and applications are officially available to enter this annual fashion contest where models walk a runway in wearable art made out of recycled materials and cast off junk.

Prizes will be awarded under a variety of categories and any group, family, school, club, non-profit, business, or individuals age 9 and above can enter.  The only rules are that outfits must be made from materials that have been previously used, found at thrift stores, or rescued from the trash. “What makes this event so fun is that participants bring awareness to our community’s waste management with such creativity. ingenuity, and playfulness,” says Creative Programs Manager Eric Jackson.

The entry fee to register is $45 per garment and $20 per garment for juniors ages 9-17 with proceeds supporting the Center’s arts and educational programming.  The deadline to apply for the Runway Show is March 2nd. “I believe that half of what makes a good outfit is the material choice,” Jackson explains, “March may seem far away but now is the time to salvage materials that speak to you as a designer.”

Kids ages 9-17 have the opportunity to enroll in the upcoming Trashion Fashion Design Class beginning February 22 where students will be given the tools, materials, and guidance on how to construct their own garment from unconventional materials from beginning to end.  Enrollment in the class will also include the students’ registration fee for the Trashion Runway Show.

There are other Trashion events that are open to the community.  The Center is currently looking for locals willing to transform a Barbie doll into a brand new work of art for their upcoming gallery show  “Barbie: Reclaimed & Reinvented.” The exhibit and silent auction not only stops the plastic dolls from sitting in landfills, but allows the countless Barbie dolls to be used as a blank canvas for an infinite number of artistic expressions.

Additionally, local dog owners interested in upcycling materials into fun costumes for their pooch can enter the “Dogs on the Catwalk” Trashion Fashion contest for dogs.  “There are so many ways a person can participate,” says Jackson. “What will you make?”
