Education and Community Engagement Manager
Exempt, full-time
Reports to the Deputy Director, Engagement and Exhibitions

SVMA’s Education and Community Engagement Manager makes a significant impact on the
Museum’s mission to build community around art and actively engage school and community
audiences with the Museum. The manager develops and grows the A.R.T.S. program and
creates and implements on-site and community-centered programming for audiences of all
ages. The manager hires and supervises a team of contracted teaching artists, and will
establish and implement consistent program evaluation practices. The manager helps to fund
and promote these programs by assisting with grant writing and fundraising efforts, and
provide creative content for promotional materials in print, on the Museum’s website, and
social media.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
School and Youth Audiences:
Serve as administrative manager of SVMA’s primary school program, Art Rewards The Student
(A.R.T.S.), managing all facets, including program design, hiring and training teaching artists,
scheduling and payment procedures, grant writing, exhibition design and implementation, and
procuring supplies, while establishing a strong, consistent relationship with Sonoma Valley
Unified School District (SVUSD) faculty and administration.
• Evaluate the progress and success of A.R.T.S. and its staff, ensuring the ongoing pursuit of
developing a high-quality program and professional development
• Research, develop, and implement A.R.T.S. curriculum structure and facilitate the
specialized training of the teaching artist team
• Hire, train, manage, and support/coach a team of contracted teaching artists, program
volunteers, and interns, and work to grow these vital teams
• Work in partnership with Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) staff and administrators to
facilitate VTS training and practices with SVMA’s teaching artists and school faculty
• Work toward creating, developing and expanding summer, school-break, and teen
programming, including the Museum’s Summer Camp offerings and Family and Holiday
“Make-Ins,” and creating and developing new programs for students ages K-12
• Manage all aspects of maintaining a high functioning art-making studio in the Museum
including recruiting new instructors and teaching artists, purchasing and maintaining art
supplies, equipment, and fixtures
Adult and SVMA Member Audiences:
• Create, develop, and manage all aspects of specific participatory on-site programming,
which includes studio workshops and classes, Art Nights, Holiday Make-ins, and seasonal
Family Days, etc., themed to SVMA’s exhibitions

• Assess participants’ needs and wants to inform the development and offering of new
programs
• Provides assistance and staffing as needed with public programs and events.
Community Engagement:
• Create, implement, and supervise community programs that fulfill the Museum’s mission to
engage participants beyond its walls and build community
• Interact and collaborate with local non-profit arts organizations on behalf of the Museum to
create mutually beneficial partnership programs
• Establish partnerships with funders to increase scholarship opportunities for program
participation among low-income, underserved youth
• Create opportunities for creative community projects, which may include an exhibition
component at SVMA
• Evaluate current projects and assess community needs and wants to inform the
development and offering of new programs
Department Administration:
• Maintain and establish relationships and collaborations with other arts and community
organizations to develop exemplary partnerships around arts education
• Develop and maintain annual budgets for the Museum’s A.R.T.S program, workshops and
programs, and community engagement projects
• Assist director of development and marketing with writing grant proposals and reports and
establishing partnerships in the community
• Provide marketing and publicity support for education programs
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Minimum 2 years experience in an art museum educator position preferred, along with
managing teaching artists and/or teaching art in a museum or primary school setting
• BA/BS degree completed in art, art education, or art history. MA in museum studies highly
desirable; strong background in contemporary and modern art history a must
• Experience managing and maintaining a functional and inspirational art studio space for
instructors and learners of all ages
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable
• Strong management, organizational, writing and communication skills; strong curriculum
writing along with experience developing consistent program evaluation practices
• Proficient with all MS and Mac office software on a Mac platform
• Excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, sound judgment, positive attitude, and ability to
work independently as well as in a close team environment
• Physical requirements include sitting and standing for long periods, bending, squatting,
lifting up to 40lbs

Compensation/Benefits:
• Salary range of $50-55k.
