IDEA: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access in the Classroom Series

In this three-part virtual series, participants will explore the science and social systems that impact classroom practice. This engaging, interactive, and non-judgmental series will support arts educators and administrators as they reflect their practice toward culture, communications, instruction, and student expectations in the classroom.

Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom

When students feel welcomed, accepted, and valued, their level of engagement, effort, and connection to curriculum will dramatically increase. This training will focus on creating an inclusive classroom culture by embracing the cornerstones of openness, clear communications, and respect. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of diversity and inclusion and reflect on their own lived experience while exploring
characteristics of a truly inclusive educational environment.

Mitigating Unconscious Bias and Micro-Aggressions in the Classroom

Unconscious bias occurs when we make spontaneous judgments about people or situations based on past experiences, culture, or environment. In this workshop, participants will explore aspects of their own identity through the lens of media and lived experience to consider how those aspects are depicted, whether positive or negative. This training will provide participants with critical insights that will inform their instruction as well as techniques to identify and address unconscious bias and micro-aggressions that may surface in an educational setting.

Allyship in the Classroom
with Dr. Erika Powell
December 8, 2021 4:00–5:30pm
Educators have a responsibility to ensure a welcome, safe, and supportive learning environment. Whether directly interacting with students, parents, or colleagues or witnessing interactions between others, participants will explore concrete, actionable, tools and methods in order to be advocates and allies for their students, themselves, and others. This training is part of a comprehensive professional development program serving teachers, teaching artists, and administrators in Sonoma County and beyond.
