Learn about the unique qualities and process of indigo dyeing, along with dye techniques that take advantage of the indigo’s special nature. We will also work with native oak galls as an underdye.

Students will:

  • Learn about the process of how to make and maintain an indigo vat (using natural indigo powder, soda ash and thiox)
  • Learn how and when to dye with oak galls
  • Experiment with itajime (clamp dyeing), shibori (tie dyeing), and ombre (gradient dyeing) with fabric provided by the instructor
  • Dye a couple of garments or pieces of fabric brought by each student. (Silk, cotton, and rayon work best. Wool and linen are okay. Synthetics will not dye.)
  • Learn about growing indigo in their own gardens

We will have a potluck lunch, giving everyone time to socialize with the instructor and fellow students.

What to bring:

  • Something to share for the potluck lunch
  • Any personal beverages and snacks
  • Wear layered clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Notebook and camera if desired
  • Two small garments or pieces of fabric (natural fibers only)
