WTAW Press is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded and directed by Peg Alford Pursell, devoted to discovering and publishing enduring literary works. WTAW publishes a carefully curated list of titles across a range of genres (literary fiction, creative nonfiction, and prose that falls somewhere in between), subject matter, and perspectives.

Our books have been reviewed and covered in Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Shelf Awareness, Ms. Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, Booklist, the Moscow Times, among other national and international media outlets. They’ve found an ardent readership, as evidenced by their regular and consistently long-lasting appearances on the bestselling lists of  Small Press Distribution.

Our books have received awards, accolades, and other notice, such as appearing on coveted lists of best books of the year and most anticipated forthcoming books pre-publication. WTAW books have received the Foreword Book of the Year, Northern California Book Award shortlist — the only small publisher of the list of 5 — the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing long list, among others. Learn more about our books at our website, learn more about our publishing program on our website.

WTAW has established the annual Kevin McIlvoy Book Prize for unpublished books of prose, beginning September 30, 2023.

WTAW’s new imprint is Betty. Founded May 2023, Betty will publish books by women—for everyone.

WTAW’s imprint Alcove Chapbooks publishes chapbooks of prose, selected from the annual Alcove Chapbook Series Competition.
