Student Arts Spotlight
Student Arts Spotlight shares the good news of the arts making a difference in students’ lives in a monthly feature. The Sonoma County Arts Education Alliance is pleased to share the accomplishment of Ella Wen, Poetry Out Loud Winner Sonoma County March 2021.
Ella is a 9th grader at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa. She represented Sonoma County in the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition in mid-March, in which she was noted as scoring among the top recitation submissions from across the state. Ella said about her participation in the county program, “Winning Sonoma County POL was a huge shock to me and I feel so incredibly fortunate and honored to have taken a part in this event! I really owe it all to my teachers and classmates for all their support.”

Dance CONNECT
Dance CONNECT is a collaboration between the Sonoma State University Department of Dance, Creative Sonoma, and area schools that brings movement, connection, and community to local students. The project also supports the bridge from distance learning to in-person instruction. Students from SSU’s Dance Methodologies class created choreography that is taught live via Zoom. Recorded instructional videos provide a fun way to continue to learn to dance. The project ends in a virtual school-wide dance party. Dance CONNECT is currently scheduling in Sonoma County schools this spring.

AEA Meetup for District/School Admin
Join the AEA for a Meetup of district/school administrators, curriculum instruction directors, school board members, and education foundations. Featured presenters will include Dr. Mariana Astorga-Alamanza, VAPA Coordinator at Lynwood USD and Instructional Quality Commission Member of the California Department of Education, speaking about the Lynwood District’s program of equitable access in arts education. Also featured is Elizabeth Robertson, Windsor USD VAPA Facilitator, sharing strategies on Social Emotional Learning and the Arts.

Bringing Books to Life, an Arts Integration Professional Development
In this Luther Burbank Center for the Arts workshop, classroom teachers will be introduced to techniques that help students script and stage whatever they’re reading in class, both virtually and in-person. The text is geared for middle and high school students, and the strategy is also effective with texts for younger readers.
