The County of Sonoma is pleased to invite you to respond to a Request for Proposals for Interpretive Signage at Helen Putnam Regional Park.

Project Background and Description

Helen Putnam Regional Park is a 216-acre wilderness park southwest of Petaluma. It contains 6 miles of trails across grassy hillsides and weave through oak woodlands. Ridge-top trails provide panoramic views of the city and the southern Sonoma County countryside. The park features a pond, accessible playground, picnic area and gazebo, and paved and unpaved trails for hikers, cyclists, and equestrians to have experiences that vary in length and difficulty.

Like many other regional parks, the property used to be a ranch before it was purchased by the county in 1978 and opened as a park in 1983. The park is named after Helen Putnam, a former Sonoma County supervisor and Petaluma’s first female mayor. The park is located at 411 Chileno Valley Rd, Petaluma with future planned expansion and points of access.

The park has existing signage including wayfinding/map signage, rules and regulations signage, and interpretive signage. Regional Parks seeks to provide a more comprehensive and seamless visitor experience replacing or enhancing existing signage with new interpretive signs.

Desired Goals/Objectives/Outcomes

Regional Parks seeks interpretive signage on varying themes throughout Helen Putnam Regional Park. Proposed signage should be part of an Interpretive Signage Plan for the park that contains the following elements:

  • Interpretive theme for up to 8 unique signs. Themes may include the following suggestions:
    o Oak woodland diversity
o California red-legged frog and other local wildlife
    o Helen Putnam legacy
o Current and historic land management
o Scenic urban buffer and views
    o Other themes as identified
  • Location of each sign
  • Description of how interpretive signage would integrate with or replace existing signs
  • Description of how interpretive signage would help create a cohesive and comprehensive user experience
  • Description of how wayfinding and/or rules and regulations could be integrated into interpretation
  • Description of the format and of how final content will be delivered including ownership and use of any photos or original artwork associated with sign development

Regional Parks anticipates working with the successful respondent to choose 4 unique themes from those proposed in the Interpretive Signage Plan to be fully developed into signs as part of this Request for Proposals.
