Student Arts Spotlight shares the good news of the arts making a difference in students’ lives in a monthly feature. The Sonoma County Arts Education Alliance is pleased to share the Alexander Valley Film Society Student Film Competition Winners for June 2021 and were honored in a drive-in screening event, pictured below. Seeking New Youth Poet Laureate

Sonoma County California Poets in the Schools seeks to acknowledge a student who has achieved excellence in poetry. CalPoets will name the next Youth Poet Laureate of Sonoma County in August 2021.  The Youth Poet Laureate will be supported as an emerging arts leader for the county – who is helping to raise the profile of poetry and develop its audience.  Learn more HERE.

Paid Internship for High School Arts Education Activist

The Student Voices Campaign is looking for 9th – 12th graders enrolled in California public schools during the 2021-2022 academic year to intern as part of an Arts Education Activism program. The Arts Education Activism Internship brings together students from across California to explore the impacts of activism. In this online program, the group will work creatively and collaboratively to build a statewide network of student activists committed to creating change in their schools and communities. Introduction to California Arts Standards

The California Arts Standards Introduction Professional Learning is designed for arts educators, multiple subject teachers, school and district administrators, and teaching artists to deepen their understanding of the 2019 California Arts Standards for Public Schools and explore strategies for implementation. This 2-hour professional learning will be offered virtually six times this summer. Learn more HERE.

Arts Education and Social-Emotional Learning Outcomes Among K-12 Students: Developing a Theory of Action

This report emphasizes that arts education settings have great potential to provide intrinsic benefits to young people. With deliberate planning and awareness, arts educators can shape opportunities for deep and lasting development of social emotional skills and well-being.

The Effects of Musical Training on Child Development: A randomized trial of El Sistema in Venezuela

Key findings from a study of a large scale music program on children’s development revealed improved levels of self control particularly from boys who have been exposed to violence.
