Student Arts Spotlight

Student Arts Spotlight shares the good news of the arts making a difference in students’ lives in a monthly feature. Summer time is always a great time for more art! The Summer Artist Series from Chop’s Teen Club’s brings in outside professional artists to teach classes with the goal of creating exposure to new mediums of art including performing art, digital art, and fine art. Great job, Chop’s Teen Club!

Closes Sept. 25! Grants for Showcases and Arts Plans

A 4th Round of Grants is available to school districts! Two options:

• Districts that currently have a strategic arts plan can apply for funding to support a district or regional Showcase with an option to include a local artist.
• Districts without a strategic arts plan can apply for support to write a plan with a district leadership team and consultant.
• Grant information and a video of the grant workshop is available at CreativeSonoma.org/aef-grant.

Attention Artists! Interested in Learning Skills to Teach?

With more than $9 million going to Sonoma County schools every year from Prop 28 for more arts education, the need for a workforce of arts educators is greater than ever!  Prop 28 will provide support for arts programs, so that students have the opportunity to learn arts disciplines that are required by our state education code – visual art, music, theater, dance – in grades 1-12. Schools are required to use the funding to address current gaps in their arts education programs.  

The Luther Burbank Center for the Arts is offering a TEACHING ARTIST TRAINING COURSE, a 4-part series with a mix of self-paced online course work and live class sessions that will cover:

• Designing Residencies for Students
• Designing Lessons for Classroom Instruction
• Classroom Management 

Instruction will be provided by Focus 5, Inc. The cost of the training is quite reasonable at $30 for the Course.

To support next steps after the Teaching Artist Training Course, Creative Sonoma is supporting a paid Teaching Artist Practicum eligible to those teaching artists who complete the LBC Course. The Practicum pairs participants with LBC’s expert teaching artists for a hands on, in-school experience. Participants will shadow LBC teaching artists through a residency process, receive mentorship and guidance from LBC staff, and ultimately be given the opportunity to take the role of lead teaching artist in a structured classroom environment. Funding for the Practicum provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Advocacy & Appreciation Night at the Santa Rosa Symphony

Prop 28 is Coming!

Sonoma County SCHOOL ARTS EDUCATORS in Music, Visual Art, Dance, Theater, and Media Arts! Be acknowledged at the November 4 concert of the Santa Rosa Symphony with free admission for you and a guest. Registration is required for complimentary tickets. Deadline to register is September 6.
