Michelle Hirsch Creative Sonoma Grantee, Mixed, Visual Arts Mixed Media Artist: I experiment with found material in my mixed media works. My recent collages and installations have incorporated materials such as syringes, bandages, masks, tree wound sealer, flagging tape, Venetian plaster and charred trees from the wildfires. There is always strong research component behind my work. I immerse myself in the environment for site specific projects.  I work intuitively and projects will morph depending on material constraints and the direction of my research. As an immigrant, I am interested in the falsehood of the Other.  The recurring themes in my body of work are related to identity and healing.

As an artist, Christine is passionate about the beauty of life and lives in gratitude.  Her artwork portrays this with whimsical movements, shapes and colors.  Her philosophy is to “Live to love” and “Every breath we take is precious.”  Her artwork is a way to share moments in time.

Marshall House Project Music Marshall House Project is a driving soul-funk outfit with one foot rooted in the deep pockets of the past and the other fearlessly exploring the deep fry of the future. The sound is an electric eclectic love-child: the product of an affair between Jimi Hendrix and the Funky Meters, after a long night of drinking with space aliens, and jamming to Bob on the jukebox. The power quartet delivers a mash-up of energetic funk and slinky soul with a psychedelic twist and a chili salt rim. The mission: to create an uplifting dance experience, spun full of twists and turns, interlaced with conscious reflective lyrics, expanding, contracting and alive like a universe unto itself.

Aim Hover Illustration, Mixed, Other, Painting, Visual Arts Artist Statement My works are a representation of my ever persistent dream states and my desire for connection. My aim is to allow viewers to confront their own emotions, while discovering the emotional layers of my work. I desire to alleviate, even a little bit, the existential loneliness in the world and fuel personal connection through my unique artistic expression. Biography My name is Aim Hover. I was born in Greenbrae, California, in 2001. I am based in Sonoma County and I typically work in Northern California. I am an expressionist and I mostly paint. I work in acrylic, oil, and spray paint. One of my first experiences as an artist was when I was 2 years old, left alone for only a few seconds with finger paint nearby. It wasn't long before I covered the walls and myself in green paint. It's safe to say I have always had a curiosity for color and artistic expression. My art is currently influenced by Pabo Piccaso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Bud Snow and several music artists; including Aaron May, Ron Obasi, J Cole, and Freddie Gibbs. I am also influenced by the East Bay, taking as many trips as I can up there to gather influence spilled all over city walls and faces. My work contains lots of faces, most non-intentionally looking like my partner Izrael Brown, a clothing designer and graffiti artist who I am constantly inspired by. While I did go to an arts-centered k-8 school and attend two art classes at Santa Rosa Junior College, I am mostly self-taught. 

Melinda Hughes-Berland Photography I've been a photographer for 46 years! I love my job. I feel very fortunate. I started photographing Grand Prix and smaller horse shows plus the world famous Tevis Cup Race, shooting Cougar Rock for 36 years with my husband Paul Hughes. In 1988 I started to photograph weddings and portraits. In 2003 I recieved my PPA Master degree and certification though Professional Photographers of America. I also often painted over photographs with oils. I about 2008 I changed to the digital format. I started compositing horses with ladies in my digital art. In 2012 I achieved the Diamond status through PPA, getting all four images into the Photographic Excellence category. Very exciting.... Mostly, I have a passion for what I do and pre-invision my art. I truly love working with horses and people. Over the years I have photographed horses, wildlife, newborns, boudoir, Brides, families, maternity and individual portraits. Currently, I am focused on family portraits, newborns, maternity, wildlife and horses. I'm told I am very easy to work with and I try to always make our sessions fun! Gerald Huth Holidays Shop Local, Mixed, Painting, Sculpture, Visual Arts I have been living and working in Sonoma County for 31 years, after moving from New York City.I have had exhibitions in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, as well as a great many throughout the United States. I am an original member of the Sonoma County ArtTrails open studio tour, as well as a founding member of the Art at the Source studio tour, when I was on the Board of Directors of the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. My studio and gallery are in Forestville, and are open year round by appointment, as well as during ArtTrails. I am also involved in teaching art, and conduct a monthly collage workshop in my studio. I volunteer teaching art in Sonoma County schools, and have spent the past seven winters volunteering as an art teacher with foundations in Cambodia and India.

Jen Hyde Creative Sonoma Grantee, Literature, Media, Non-Fiction, Other

Jen Hyde is a writer, editor, and storytelling expert. Her essays have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Longreads and elsewhere.

A 2016 finalist for the Creative Capital Grant in Literature, and Jen has received fellowships from Yaddo, The Millay Colony, and the Asian American Writer's Workshop. Most recently she has been a 2023 scholar at the Sonoma County Writer's Camp and a 2023 Creative Sonoma ACE grantee. She is currently at work on a memoir about chronic illness and Chinese diasporic identity.

Sarah Hylton Artisan, Creative Sonoma Grantee, Improvisation, Mixed, Other, Painting, Sculpture, Teaching Artist for Adults, Teaching Artist for Youth Expressive Artist and Arts Facilitator specializing in a whole person-centered approach for creating art. An avid painter, dancer and ceramic sculptor; often found dancing while painting. Sarah’s paintings have been featured in galleries, juried exhibits and are in private collections. She is currently represented by Lori Austin Gallery in Sebastopol, CA. She began receiving awards as a child for her original artwork though has always resonated with the outsider and naïve artist. She is a self-taught artist and process oriented. After raising her artistically talented son, as an only parent, she is whole heartedly devoting herself to her own creative process and arts based restorative community projects. She is a 2020 Creative Sonoma Pop Up Art Grant recipient. Her current projects include the Hexagons Of Dignity Tapestry and the Art Tent. The community mural installation on the Art Tent is postponed due to Shelter In Place.

Leslie Ihrig Functional Art, Furniture, Illustration, Painting, Teacher/Instructor, Teaching Artist for Youth, Visual Arts I am an artist living in Petaluma, CA. I taught in Petaluma schools for 23 years. I am, currently, on the Board at the Petaluma Arts Center. My passion is painting and finding ways to connect arts to education. Years ago, I was a furniture design coordinator and a visual merchandising manager for Macy's California. I have a BA in Art from San Jose State University and a teaching credential from Dominican University (San Rafael). I always worked art into the curriculum, using integrated strategies in my classroom in all subject areas - ELA, math, science, history, and, of course, fine art. I incorporated VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) throughout my curriculum, as well. My work has been sold at Studio Gallery in San Francisco and at the Petaluma Arts Center. I have also shown my work at the Cabrillo College Gallery, Aqus Cafe, and I have greeting cards available at Vibe Gallery in Petaluma. I painted a piano for the Friends of Petaluma River Project (Petaluma Pete) and participated in the Black Lives Matter street mural in Petaluma. My work includes portraits of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Alexandria Ocasio Cortes, Greta Thunberg, and other important figures as well as commissioned portraits. Please visit my website to view my work.

Matthew Isais Bowker Composition, Instrumental, Music, Teacher/Instructor Matthew Isais Bowker is a Mexican-Italian- American Saxophonist, composer and educator. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and California Teaching Credential from Sonoma State University. Matthew’s mission in music is to bridge the gap between classical music and music of the Latinx/ Hispanic communities. Many members of the Latinx community don’t feel welcome in a concert hall because of the Western European traditions which have excluded them. His hope is to welcome people into classical music by playing music they’re used to hearing but set for a classical ensemble. There are many classical works written by Latinx composers that are never heard because classical ensembles don’t program them. Matthew is actively trying to change that by personally performing those works, as well as folk/ Mariachi, and arranging them for saxophone and piano to get them heard. As an educator, he feels it is important to have representation in the classroom and have children play music they can relate to instead of the same music that has been used for years. He is arranging Mexican folk music, mariachi music and many other traditional Latinx music for school ensembles like concert bands, wind ensembles, string orchestras, and symphony orchestras. He hopes that these arrangements can act as an avenue to diversity the classroom and teach about Latinx culture and traditions. If we want to see real change in our community, we have to start within the classroom.

C.K. Itamura Creative Sonoma Grantee C.K.Itamura is a Yonsei, Nikkei interdisciplinary artist based in Sonoma County, California. Her conceptual, visual, performance and community engagement art serve to engage intergenerational audiences in the exploration of observation, contemplation and expressive imagination. C.K. is a recipient of the 2019 Discovered Awards for Emerging Visual Artists made possible, in part, by Creative Sonoma and Community Foundation Sonoma County. Her essay Circuitous Paths of the Yonsei was recently commissioned and published by Write Now! SF Bay and included in the anthology Uncommon Ground: BIPOC Journeys to Creative Activism. She is: an Artist-in-Residence alumna of The Imaginists, Chalk Hill Residency and In Cahoots Residency; a co-founder of Book Arts Roadshow; an artist/director on the board of Berkeley Commonplace; an artist advisory council member of The Imaginists’ Guest House program; an advisory committee member of Write Now! SF Bay; and a former director of San Francisco Center for the Book. She has served in directorial, managerial and/or production roles for live theatrical performances, live events, concerts and festivals, radio shows and video productions. C.K. is a resident artist of San Francisco Unified School District Libraries and works with SFArtsEd, San Francisco Public Library, Contemporary Jewish Museum and San Mateo County Libraries to provide professional development workshops for educators, and hands-on art-making workshops for students and the general public.

Drew Jackson Mixed, Photography, Visual Arts My journey with encaustic medium started in 2010 when I participated in a workshop with Kathleen McCallum at a local art store. Since that time, I have taken a class at the Mendocino Art Center with Mira White and an encaustic mono printing class with Rae Miller in San Miguel Allende, Mexico. The mono printing class in Mexico changed my focus from traditional hard-surface encaustic painting to what I do now which is what I call, Digital Encaustic. What I do, simply put, is paint with a wax medium specifically to photograph. The subject can be a dry, cool encaustic piece but more often than not, the piece is molten on the hot plate when I photograph it. I also use much more than wax in my creations.

Suzanne Jacquot Painting, Visual Arts DIALOGUE WITH NATURE ARTIST STATEMENT I am a native Californian artist, who creates abstract paintings inspired by nature.  My paintings depict feelings, moods, and energy I experience while exploring the diverse terrains in Sonoma County.  I am influenced by nature’s inherent cycles of birth, growth, dying and decay where I find beauty in the forms and palettes that mutate throughout the year.  In response, my paintings are multilayered fields of color, shapes and gestural marks.  While walking in Nature, I am touched by the vulnerability, resilience, preservation and change of all of life and the underlying deeper truth of a constant stream of energy which never changes and which unifies everything. Amanda Janik Literature, Non-Fiction, Other, Performance Art Amanda Janik (yes, going for third person here, folks) lives in Sonoma County and spends her days writing, editing, proofreading, posting, cooking, drinking, saying 'no' to children, and trying to figure out who or what is pecking her chickens' eggs apart. A Cultural Ambassador for Out There Santa Rosa, Amanda's writing has also been published in The Sun Magazine, on Chacos.com, Silver Birch Press and throughout the Sonoma County Visitor's Guide, to name a few. She has also read her personal writing at Get Lit!, Lit Crawl, Lyrics & Dirges and more. In 2015 Amanda brought the hit stage show Mortified - which also has a documentary on Netflix and a popular weekly podcast - to Sonoma County. When not producing the local chapter, she can still be found performing on Mortified stages in San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Los Angeles and New York, with more to come. She has participated on behalf of Mortified at SF SketchFest, SF ImprovFest, and at private events she's not allowed to talk about.

Carolyn Jarvis Painting, Visual Arts Carolyn Jarvis is Sonoma County, California oil painter known for her seascapes and landscapes. Dr. Greg Johnson Dr. Greg Johnson is quickly becoming recognized as a luminary figure in the Jazz community.  Equally at home in multiple musical genres, Greg has developed a unique musical style that combines Jazz, Classical and Popular music.   As a saxophonist, Greg has appeared in concert and on mainstream recordings with Jazz greats Curtis Fuller, Billy Taylor, Dick Oatts, Alan Pasqua, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer and many more.  He has appeared on stage with with Pop and Rock acts such as Saint Motel, Robin Thicke and Barry Manilow at some of the biggest festivals and venues in the world.   Increasingly know for his big band compositions, Greg’s music has been widely performed in both Jazz and Classical contexts. A dynamic teacher of ensembles and improvisation, Greg has built one of the top Jazz programs in the state of California and the country as Director of Jazz Studies at the Marin School of the Arts.  Keeping an active schedule as a clinician and guest composer/saxophonist, he is praised for his relatable, organic approach to music.  Greg has released seven recordings under his name and has contributed to dozens more. Recently, Greg was added to the 2017 GRAMMY ballot in the category of "Best Improvised Jazz Solo" for his work on Aarón Serfaty's "In the Game."

Jennifer Joyce, a native of Southern California, embarked on a life of creating functional and sculptural ceramics in 1995.

Joyce is a sculptor and ceramist whose body of work is both thoughtful and whimsical.  She brings a unique background in dance, music, archaeology and photography to her art.  As a past modern dancer and working archaeologist, Jennifer weaves lightness and whimsy, movement, dance and music into her pieces.

Jennifer opened her own ceramics school in Santa Monica, California in 1995 for 18 years and established another location in San Clemente in 2013.  In her San Clemente studio she continued her ceramics school and also founded the Artists Studios of San Clemente, an artist studio collective that is still thriving.

Since moving to Sonoma County, Jennifer has opened her private studio to teaching ceramics and sculpture, has taught numerous classes and workshops at the Sonoma Community Center, teaches for the Mentor Program and has taught part-time at the Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa.  Her emphasis is on hand building, wheel throwing and figurative sculpture.

My work is all variations on a theme, and the theme is flow. Flow and restraint. I’m better at the first than the second. Finding my way to creating the art I envision (and have rarely achieved) is what keeps me coming back to the art table, again and again.

Barbara Kelley Mixed, Painting, Printmaking, Visual Arts Barbara Kelley is a Printmaker and Painter. Originally from Alaska, she now resides in The Sea Ranch and Santa Rosa, CA. Her Santa Rosa studio is open year round by appointment. Barbara completed college, combining courses from the California State University and the University of California Berkeley, followed by three additional years of college art courses specializing in printmaking and painting. She also studied at the Kala Art Institute, Rocky Vine Press, Evans Encaustics, and Brinker Ink. Her works, recently selected to join the Pat Clark International Art Collection at the Ellsworth Foundation in Iowa Falls, joins a collection, which includes works by Man Ray, Japanese artist Kojiro Akagi, and Danish artist Leif Peterson. Her work is also in public collections of the Brooklyn Art Library, Kaiser Permanente, U.S. Department of State, Art in Embassies Program, Visual Artists’ Registry. Private collections of her works reside in Australia, Canada, Europe, and throughout the United States.
